One of Mexico’s largest financial institutions to expand its ATM network with NCR deposit technology

Since last year, NCR has installed more than 1,500 Banamex-branded ATMs throughout Mexico, including 750 intelligent deposit units with coin, cash and check deposit functionality.

The new SelfServ ATMs will be installed in existing Banamex branches, as well as a number of smaller-footprint “digital branches”. NCR anticipates completing the installations by December.

Hudson’s Bay Company, RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust closed 2nd tranche of their joint venture focused on real estate growth opportunities in Canada

TORONTO & NEW YORK, 2015-11-26 — /EPR Retail News/ — Hudson’s Bay Company (“HBC”) (TSX:HBC) and RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust (“RioCan”) (TSX:REI.UN) announced today that they have closed the second tranche of their joint venture (the “RioCan-HBC JV”) focused on real estate growth opportunities in Canada. The joint venture will enable HBC and RioCan to build on the strength of existing real estate assets and identify new real estate growth opportunities. Unless otherwise indicated, all amounts are expressed in Canadian dollars.

As part of the second tranche closing:

  • HBC indirectly contributed three ground-leased properties consisting of Yorkdale Shopping Centre,Scarborough Town Centre and Square One (collectively the “YSS Properties”) totaling 735,926 square feet to the RioCan-HBC JV.
  • The transaction values this second tranche of the HBC real estate contribution at approximately $379 millionbased on a capitalization rate of 5.26%. As part of the transaction, the HBC mortgage on the Yorkdale ground lease of approximately $48 million was assumed by an entity related to the RioCan-HBC JV, resulting in a total HBC equity stake of $1,281 million or 89.7% in the RioCan-HBC JV.

RioCan has committed to contribute a total of $325 million to the RioCan-HBC JV for an eventual pro forma equity stake of approximately 20%. The balance of these contributions will consist of $52.5 million in tenant allowances, and$125.4 million to be used to fund future property acquisitions to increase the value and diversify the tenant base of the RioCan-HBC JV. These contributions will be made by the third anniversary of the first tranche closing date.

On August 4, 2015, HBC obtained a favourable court declaration and order from the Superior Court of Justice-Ontariowhich permits the indirect contribution of the three ground-leased YSS Properties to RioCan-HBC JV. This court order has been appealed by the related landlords. If the landlords’ appeal is successful, HBC and RioCan have agreed to unwind HBC’s capital contribution of these ground leases, in whole or in part, if required to protect the value of these assets.

National Retail Federation data shows that mobile is set to play an important role in all phases of the holiday shopping experience. A survey found that 22 percent of shoppers planned to purchase on mobile during the season, the highest since NRF began asking the question in 2011. Thirty-eight percent of shoppers said they’ll be using smartphones to research purchases, and 20 percent will use them to look up product availability in store.

Tesco PLC reached agreement in principle to settle a class action commenced in New York on behalf of the holders of its ADRs

CHESHUNT, England, 2015-11-26 — /EPR Retail News/ — Tesco PLC today announces that it has reached agreement in principle to settle a class action commenced in New York on behalf of the holders of the Company’s American Depositary Receipts (“ADRs”) (ADRs represent approximately two per cent of the total issued ordinary shares of the Company).

The class action was against the Company and certain of its former directors and alleged breaches of certain U.S. federal securities laws in connection with the overstatement of commercial income which was announced in September 2014.  The settlement agreement, which is subject to confirmation by a federal court in New York, provides for Tesco to pay $12 million to settle the class action with no admission of liability.  This agreement, if confirmed, will settle one of two claims before US courts arising out of the commercial income overstatement.  The other claim is brought in Ohio by the remaining holders of ADRs equivalent to less than 0.2% of the total issued ordinary shares of the Company.

Tesco to launch UK’s first nut and tortilla snack range with tipple recommendations on the packet

CHESHUNT, England, 2015-11-26 — /EPR Retail News/ — It’s one of those things that can really help make a drinks party stand out – the perfect pairing of snacks with your tipples of choice.

But now, with the festive season soon upon us, Tesco has come up with a helping hand by launching the UK’s first  nut and tortilla snack range with tipple recommendations on the packet.

For instance, if you want to impress guests with, say, a salted caramel flavoured nut mix then Tawny Port would go well because its full-bodied fruitiness heightens the taste of the nuts.

And if you wanted to offer BBQ flavour tortilla chips then the recommended pairing would be ruby ale as the smoky taste blends really well with the rich maltiness of the beer.

The pairings were made by a team of food and drink experts who trialled hundreds of different nut, tortilla chip, ale and seasonal drink combinations to reach the five that are being launched across the UK this week.

Tesco drinks developer Danielle Jack said: “We hope that these recommendations can inspire customers to try something new and create a ‘wow’ factor with their guests if they are hosting a drinks party this Christmas.

CHESHUNT, England, 2015-11-26 — /EPR Retail News/ — Customers are in for a welcome surprise this festive season – Christmas sprouts are due to be much bigger than usual on account of the unseasonably warm autumn Britain has been experiencing.

With temperatures reaching up to 10 degrees higher than usual at this time of year it has led to sprouts growing about a third larger than average.

For much of the last four weeks temperatures in the UK have been as high as 15C and the extra heat has boosted sprout growth.

Tesco sprout expert Rob Hooper said: “The larger size of sprouts will be good news for customers cooking the Christmas dinner this year as it means the vegetables will be easier to peel, without losing their sweet flavour.

“Nobody likes the chore of peeling sprouts but this year, because of their size, customers will need fewer of them on their Christmas dinner plates and that means less work in the kitchen.”

Tesco’s sprouts have been grown by one of the UK’s largest suppliers of brassica, TH Clements, who are based in Benington, near Boston in Lincolnshire.

Richard Mowbray, commercial manager at TH Clements said: “In a normal year average sprouts are about 30mm in diameter and weigh around 15g and the ones we are harvesting already are absolute whoppers – over 50mm in diameter and weighing over 50g.”

Clements say that the cooler weather forecast for next week is welcome as it will slow the growth and help some of the leaves drop from the stalks which makes harvesting easier.

Amazon.com announced plans to open a fulfillment center in Fall River, Mass

FALL RIVER, Mass., 2015-11-26 — /EPR Retail News/ — Earlier today at a press conference with Governor Charlie Baker, Amazon.com, Inc.(NASDAQ:AMZN) announced plans to open a fulfillment center in Fall River, Mass. This facility will bring more than 500 full-time jobs to the area. These jobs will be eligible for comprehensive benefits on day one that include health insurance, 401(k) with 50 percent match, bonuses, company stock awards and a network of support to help ensure employees succeed.

“Our footprint in Massachusetts continues to grow. We currently employ hundreds of developers, engineers, and scientists. Now we will add hundreds of additional full-time associates in our first fulfillment center in the state,” said Mike Roth, Amazon’s vice president of North America operations. “Massachusetts is a great place to do business and we are excited to be creating more jobs.”

Amazon currently operates a sortation center in Stoughton and also has research and technology offices throughout the state.

“Amazon’s presence in Fall River and their commitment to create hundreds of new jobs will bring an important economic boost to one of our gateway cities and the surrounding region,” Governor Charlie Baker said. “Our administration is focused on paving the way for more companies to grow and expand in the Commonwealth and increasing economic opportunities available for our residents to succeed.”

Hourly employees at Amazon fulfillment centers also enjoy maternity and paternity leave benefits. These benefits offer up to 20 weeks of paid leave, a flexible Ramp Back Program, and a Leave Share Program that allows employees the ability to share their paid leave with their spouse or partner.

Argos gears up for Black Friday mobile shopping bonanza

Milton Keynes, UK, 2015-11-26 — /EPR Retail News/ — With just a few days to go until the biggest shopping event of the year, Argos is gearing up its online channels, stores, distribution network and people to be ready to fulfil demand for the thousands of deals it is offering to UK shoppers for Black Friday 2015.

The retailer expects this year’s Black Friday to be another mobile-led event with shoppers on smart phones and tablets leading the bargain frenzy, after a staggering two thirds of Argos shoppers snapped up Black Friday deals using smart phones and tablets in 2014.

This year, overall Argos will release thousands of deals on its websites and apps to celebrate the Black Friday shopping season.  Its 12 day Black Friday event launched on Friday 20 November, which included ‘3 for 2’ on toys and amazing deals on videos games, 4K TVs and cameras, with some reductions at less than half price.  More deals are being added in the run up to the day itself.  A select number of highly competitive ‘When It’s Gone, It’s Gone’ (WIGIG) deals will launch in the early hours of Black Friday, followed by more bargains throughout December.

Chief Operating Officer at Argos, David Robinson, said: “Customers can get great deals on everything they want for loved ones or themselves this Christmas.  We can also help them get their hands on items fast, in the way they want.

“We know an increasing number of customers want to be able to snap up deals whenever and wherever they are, using smart phones and tablets whether it’s in front of the telly or on their way to work, so we’ve made this as easy as possible for them.  Our Fast Track collection and delivery and Check & Reserve services enable them to secure the product they want online and avoid the Black Friday rush if they choose.”

On the high street, Argos has recruited an additional 9,000 temporary workers to help serve customers in its 800+ stores over Christmas.  On Black Friday itself, they will be joined by hundreds of head office workers helping out on the shop floor.

To get the deals and top products out to stores and customers’ homes, Argos’ 11 enormous distribution centres covering a total of 5.4 million square feet of floor space will have 6,100 warehouse workers and 1,000 delivery drivers, supported by 3,000 Fast Track drivers based at local stores, dispatching millions of gifts over Black Friday and beyond.  High-demand products being ferried across the UK this Christmas using a fleet of 1,800 lorries and Fast Track vans include wearable tech such as FitBit, Nutribullets, 4K TVs, Xboxes and games such as Call of Duty, and hot toys for 2015 such as Star Wars, Lego and Thunderbirds Tracy Island.

Customers UK-wide shopping for deals on Black Friday will be able to take advantage of Argos’ innovative new same-day home delivery service, Fast Track.  Same-day delivery slots will be offered to customers on a first-come, first-served basis, with subsequent days’ slots offered once Black Friday’s delivery schedules are full.

In 2014, Argos saw more than 13.5m visits to its web channels on Black Friday, up 197 per cent from the previous year.  This year it expects to see a repeat of last year’s unusual shopping patterns as consumers stayed up to shop into the wee small hours to snap up the best deals as soon as they launched.  There were more than half a million of visits to the Argos website between 1-2am in 2014.

In 2014, Argos’ peak hour for orders was 2–3pm with an average of eight orders a second. On average per minute Argos sold 14 VAX steam mops, nine Scooby Doo Hide and Seeks and seven iPad Mini Wi-Fi 16GBs.

Argos.co.uk and its mobile site and apps received around 900 million visits in the last financial year making Argos the UK’s largest high street retailer online.  Around 45 per cent of all Argos sales are online, with sales through mobile devices now representing 25 per cent of total sales.

MADRID, SPAIN, 2015-11-26 — /EPR Retail News/ — Fundación EROSKI y el Comité español de ACNUR, la Agencia de la ONU para los Refugiados, han firmado hoy un convenio de colaboración para impulsar una nueva campaña a favor de los refugiados y desplazados sirios. El objetivo de esta campaña, que invitará a todos a recordar los mejores momentos vividos durante este año, es  reunir 150.000 euros a través de la venta de estrellas decorativas solidarias al precio simbólico de 1 euro. El Comité español de ACNUR será el encargado de gestionar la ayuda recaudada para atender las necesidades de las personas refugiadas y desplazadas más vulnerables.

Desde EROSKI siempre hemos respondido ante situaciones de emergencia humanitaria. Este compromiso solidario como cooperativa nos anima a lanzar, coincidiendo con estas fechas navideñas, esta campaña a favor de los refugiados. Una emergencia que no cesa, la de los refugiados

La violencia en Siria estalló en marzo de 2011 y, desde entonces, más de cuatro millones de personas se han visto obligadas a refugiarse en los países vecinos y más de siete millones se encuentran aún desplazadas dentro de la propia Siria.

Los países de la región están siendo muy generosos con los refugiados pero se encuentran ya al límite de su capacidad de acogida. En Turquía, hay más de 2 millones de refugiados sirios; en Líbano más de 1 millón; en Jordania hay más de 600.000; y, en Irak, cerca de 250.000. Casi dos millones de ellos son niños.

El papel de ACNUR en esta emergencia

ACNUR tenía oficinas en Siria y en los países limítrofes desde antes del inicio de este conflicto. Sin embargo, a partir de esta crisis, ACNUR ha intensificado y multiplicado sus operaciones de ayuda con el objetivo de proporcionar a los refugiados y desplazados protección internacional y asistencia vital.

Al mismo tiempo, ACNUR ha incrementado también sus operaciones y su presencia en los países europeos afectados por los recientes flujos de refugiados. ACNUR está apoyando a los refugiados en todas las etapas de su viaje y su personal está en primera línea en todos los países de Europa asegurando que los refugiados reciben la ayuda y asistencia de supervivencia, así como la información clave para ayudarles a entender los procesos que garantizan su protección internacional,  incluyendo su identificación, su registro, la manera en la que deben de solicitar asilo o cómo acceder al proceso de reunificación familiar o de reasentamiento en un tercer país.

IKEA hired contractors for for building its future Memphis store

CONSHOHOCKEN, PA, 2015-11-26 — /EPR Retail News/ — IKEA, the world’s leading home furnishings retailer, today announced contractors now are hired for building its future Memphis store. Pending remaining permits, this progress allows the project to continue on track for site work to commence, with a groundbreaking next month and a store opening in Fall 2016, increasing the Swedish retailer’s presence in the Southeastern United States. Until the store opens, customers can shop at IKEA stores in Atlanta, GA or Frisco, TX; or online at IKEA-USA.com. Also, a St. Louis store opened recently on September 30, 2015.

IKEA has chosen Linkous Construction Company to serve as Construction Manager for IKEA Memphis site work and store development project. Memphis-based Linkous has built nearly 40 million square feet of commercial, industrial and institutional projects in the past three decades. Other Memphis firms involved with this project are: real estate brokerage CBRE, site selection support; Baker Donelson Bearman Caldwell & Berkowitz as well as Burch Porter & Johnson for local land use counsel; Kimley-Horn & Associates, traffic consultant; Pangean CMD Associates, geotechnical and environmental services; and Brophy-Heineke & Associates also for environmental services. Atlanta-based GreenbergFarrow provided civil engineering services and is the project architect.

“With a contractor onboard, plans can proceed towards opening the future IKEA Memphis,” said Lars Petersson, IKEA U.S. president. “This store will provide a more convenient IKEA shopping experience for current and potential customers throughout Tennessee and the Mid-South, growing our IKEA presence in the Southeastern U.S.”

IKEA Memphis will feature nearly 10,000 exclusively designed items, 50 inspirational room-settings, three model home interiors, a supervised children’s play area, and a 350-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties such as meatballs with lingonberries and salmon plates, as well as American dishes. Other family-friendly features include a ‘Children’s IKEA’ area in the Showroom, baby care rooms, play areas throughout the store, and preferred parking. In addition to the more than 500 jobs that are expected to be created during the construction phase, approximately 225 coworkers will join the IKEA family when the new store opens. IKEA Memphis also will provide significant annual property and sales tax revenue for local governments and schools.

Located in the Wolfchase corridor, 15 miles east of downtown Memphis, the 271,000-square-foot future IKEA store and nearly 1,000 parking spaces will be built on 35 acres along the southwestern side of Interstate-40 near the Germantown Parkway exit. Store plans reflect the same unique architectural design for which IKEA stores are known worldwide. IKEA also is evaluating potential on-site power generation to complement its current renewable energy presence at nearly 90% of its U.S. locations.

H&M announces a collaboration with the Musée des Arts Décoratifs
