Retailer’s program grows year over year, saving customers more than $422 million

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2016-1-6 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer pharmacies marked a major milestone late last month when the retailer’s free prescription program hit 30 million prescriptions dispensed – 6 million alone in 2015 – since October 2006 when the program launched. The program has saved customers more than $422 million, said Nat Love, vice president of pharmacy for the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer.

“Meijer is a family-owned company committed to meeting the needs of other families,” Love said. “We do this by providing positive solutions to everyday problems, which includes access to necessary medications. We began our free prescription program with that in mind, and are pleased that so many families across the Midwest continue to find it valuable.”

The retailer’s free prescription program helps ensure the health of families and individuals by enabling Meijer customers, regardless of insurance or co-pay, to have their prescriptions filled. The program began by covering leading oral generic antibiotics, with a special focus on the prescription most often filled for children. The program expanded over the years by offering free prenatal vitamins in May 2008; metformin, the most commonly-prescribed drug for type 2 diabetes, in 2010; and atorvastatin calcium, the generic substitute for Lipitor®*, the cholesterol-lowering medication, in 2012, Love said.

The most popular free prescription filled at Meijer in 2015 was atorvastatin calcium with 3 million this year, saving customers $37.7 million, followed by:

  • Metformin with 1.4 million prescriptions and a $10.6 million cost-savings to customers;
  • Antibiotics with 1.3 million prescriptions and a $10 million cost-savings; and
  • Prenatal vitamins with 540,000 prescriptions and an $11 million cost-savings.

Price Chopper store in Guilderland, NY to be converted into Market 32

Unique Layout Will Require Store to be Closed During Construction

Schenectady, NY, 2016-1-6 — /EPR Retail News/ — The Golub Corporation, parent company of Price Chopper, Market Bistro and Market 32, today announced its newest project to convert the Price Chopper store located in the Hamilton Square shopping plaza at the corners of Routes 20 and 155 in Guilderland, NY (the former 20 Mall Plaza) into a Market 32.

Construction is slated to begin the evening of January 23 and last until Spring of 2016. During the construction period, the store will be closed to enable a more efficient construction project. Customers are encouraged to shop at the other Guilderland Price Chopper located at the corner of Western Avenue and Johnson Road (approximately two miles away) or the Colonie Price Chopper on Central Avenue (less than four miles away).

“Given the unique configuration of this store, which is very long and narrow, it’s not practical for us to keep it open during the conversion,” said Mona Golub, VP Public Relations & Consumer Services for the homegrown chain. “So, we will temporarily close the store beginning at 6:00PM on January 23 to accommodate an accelerated construction schedule that will deliver a new Market 32 to our customers by early spring.”

All current teammates have been offered temporary positions at other local Price Chopper/Market 32 stores during the conversion of this store.

The look and feel of Market 32 is distinctively more modern than Price Chopper, though many of the differences are subtle. Marked by open space, a décor filled with soft earth tones and product-focused displays, murals and lighting, the brand emphasizes convenience, ready-to-eat foods, fresh, handcrafted, and locally grown, produced and manufactured products, and intuitive product/department adjacencies (e.g. greeting cards next to the floral department).

Work is already underway on the conversion to Market 32 of another Capital Region Price Chopper at Hudson Valley Plaza in Troy, NY (79 Vandenburg Place) as well as at a store in Torrington, CT.

Evolution Fresh: Share Your Health and Wellness Activities on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook For A Chance to Win Prizes

SEATTLE, 2016-1-6 — /EPR Retail News/ — The New Year is here, and along with it comes a host of new ways to eat, drink and improve wellness.

Evolution Fresh, and its founder Jimmy Rosenberg, have a few ideas to help turn 2016 into the healthiest year yet.

Turn It Around

Sometimes doing a little can mean a lot. From drinking a green juice to taking a daily walk, Evolution Fresh is encouraging and rewarding people who turn it around with small, positive changes for a little joy and wellness in 2016.

Now through March 13, people can share their health and wellness activities on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook for a chance to win a year’s supply of Evolution Fresh green juice and other health-and-wellness-inspired prize packs*.

One easy, positive change people can make in the New Year is choosing Evolution Fresh cold-pressed, high pressure processed green juice – a tasty, nutritious way to get green vegetable goodness. When selecting a green juice, Evolution Fresh recommends turning around the bottle to examine the ingredient list. Evolution Fresh green juices feature a simple ingredient list with a green vegetable listed first – a sign of a truly green, green juice.

The greenest Evolution Fresh™ green juices are made from more than a pound of vegetables per bottle and have 10 grams of sugar or less per eight fluid-ounce serving. Additionally, Evolution Fresh juices are cold-pressed using high-pressure processing (HPP) to help protect flavor and nutrients. The brand’s green juice line-up contains authentic flavors and a variety of ingredient offerings, including:

Emerald Greens: cool cucumber with sweet apple, a squeeze of citrus and a chorus of leafy greens for a thoroughly thirst-quenching blend.

Essential Greens with Lime: a nutritious green juice with notes of spinach, romaine lettuce and kale, accented by cucumber, celery and a hint of lime for a refreshing finish. This drink is made from more than a pound of vegetables per bottle.

Green Devotion: a blend of sharp tangy celery, ultra-refreshing cucumber and leafy greens to create a light, lively juice.

Organic Sweet Greens and Ginger: made from leafy greens and vegetables blended with a sweet apple and lightly spiked with spicy ginger. All 100% organic, this is made from more than a pound of vegetables per bottle.

Sweet Greens and Lemon: a refreshing green juice featuring a medley of green vegetables, a squeeze of lemon, and a touch of sweetness from apple. This juice is made from more than a pound of vegetables per bottle.

Smooth Greens and Kale: a medley of go-to greens with potassium, a splash of tropical sweetness and a smooth mint finish. This beverage is made from more than a pound of vegetables per bottle.

Jimmy’s 2016 Rituals to Improve Wellness

The founder of Evolution Fresh has been committed to healthy living and inspiring others for more than three decades, when he began selling his juices on the beaches of Santa Monica, California. Here are three tips from Jimmy:

Drink green juice daily: I love to point people towards incorporating green juice into their daily lives and ask them to pay close attention to how it makes them feel. By making your own juice at home, blending a smoothie with a mix of seasonal fruit, spinach and kale, nut milks and superfoods or grabbing a cold-pressed green juice; making green juice a part of your daily routine is an easy way to get more vegetables and nutrients in your diet. Taking this small step in the morning helps set the tone for your day, and more nurturing choices are bound to follow throughout the day.

Get moving: Adding some form of movement into your daily routine is so important, not just for your body, but also for your mood and focus. If you are trying to begin a new habit, I recommend finding an activity that you enjoy. Do not underestimate a simple, sustainable start. Taking a short walk can be a good way to establish a ritual that you build on over time. There is also great benefit in adding stretch sessions or yoga to your routine. If you are looking for a new activity, enroll in a class at a gym or getting guidance from a fitness trainer is a great way to get inspired.

Be present and practice an attitude of gratitude: In a world where smartphones and social media are a constant source of distraction, make sure the first person you check in with each day is you. Before the hustle of the day starts, take a moment to be present and set an intention for the day. Each morning, think of three things you are grateful for. I find that this attitude of gratitude helps inspire me to carry this positive and appreciative tone into the day ahead. Another way to be mindful and become present is to practice five-minute mediations. Take a series of deep, intentional breaths to bring your awareness within.

Starbucks Coffee Passport made available to coffee lovers around the globe in a digital form

SEATTLE, 2016-1-6 — /EPR Retail News/ — An enduring coffee tasting guide used by Starbucks partners (employees) is brought to life in a digital form and made available to coffee lovers around the globe.

Company-issued print editions of the Starbucks Coffee Passport have been carried around by baristas since it was introduced in the early 1990s. The handy, pocket-size guide details a coffee’s journey from farm to cup, including the steps in growing, buying, roasting, brewing and tasting Starbucks coffee.

“We are bringing Starbucks Coffee Passport to a web app platform in a way that honors the legacy and tradition this guidebook holds for our partners, while making coffee knowledge and coffee exploration exciting and easily accessible for partners and customers alike,” said Alexandra Wheeler, Starbucks vice president of Global Digital Marketing.

Group coffee tastings are common occurrences at Starbucks. Partners are encouraged to write notes in their passport. Partners sampling Starbucks® Sumatra Coffee, for example, browse information about the coffee – including growing region and flavor notes – and add their own comments. A partner could write that the coffee tastes “earthy and herbal” or “full bodied and smooth.” When the entry is complete, the partner applies a Sumatra stamp, or sticker, to the paper passport.

The digital version enables the same type of coffee experience. Sixteen core Starbucks coffees, nearly a dozen Starbucks Reserve® Coffees and a half-dozen seasonal coffee selections may be explored through the web app coffee guide.

How-to guides and a glossary are supplemented with content from 1912 Pike, an all-things-coffee blog Starbucks launched in September that features coffee farmers’ stories from countries where Starbucks coffee is grown, video tutorials from partners and recipes.

“The Coffee Passport was made with partners in mind,” said David Carter, manager, Global Coffee & Tea Education. “It’s a partner tool, but it was also designed to be accessible for our truly coffee-curious customers.”

Accessing the Starbucks Digital Coffee Passport

Long in discussion, the Starbucks® Digital Coffee Passport was first shared with partners last month and is available for customers beginning today (January 5).

“By making this publicly accessible, we hope that Starbucks partners and customers around the world will be able to connect through coffee,” Carter said.

The passport is a web-based app for any mobile device.

  • Visit passport.starbucks.com in the Safari or Chrome mobile smartphone browsers and save a shortcut.
  • iOS: Launch the Safari browser and go to passport.starbucks.com. Tap the Share button on the bottom bar of the browser (it’s the square with the arrow pointing up). From the Share menu, tap Add to Home Screen.
  • Android: Launch Chrome for Android and go to passport.starbucks.com. Tap the menu button and then tap Add to Home Screen. The Coffee Passport icon will appear on your Home Screen like other apps or widgets.
  • Users may log in with a Facebook or Google account to save tasting notes and collect coffee tasting stamps.

As for the Starbucks Coffee Passport in its original form, the tradition will continue.

“The print version remains available, and holds a special place for many of us,” Carter said. “Some of us really enjoy building a collection of full passports and the tactile feel of a used and worn passport. For those who prefer a physical passport, we won’t leave you behind.”
