Raley’s Family of Fine Stores to offer healthier choices at checkout stands

“Let’s Begin to Offer Healthier Choices at Checkout”

Fair Oaks, CA, 2016-Nov-16 — /EPR Retail News/ — In an ongoing effort to enhance life with health and wellness, Raley’s Family of Fine Stores has implemented “Better for You” check stands throughout the chain.  This includes removing all artificially sweetened sodas from the check stand cold cases, while also upgrading the selection of snacks and treats- enlarging offerings such as granola bars, nutrition bars and improving the quality of certain candy options.

“We know impulsive choices happen at the check stand,” said Keith Knopf, Raley’s Chief Operating Officer. “We are proud to take a brave next step by making it easier for shoppers to choose healthy, more nutritious options.”

‘Better For You’ check stands are another first step toward helping customers make affordable, nutritious choices.  Last month, Raley’s began offering free fruit for kids. In August, they eliminated Raley’s private label brand soda that contained high-fructose corn syrup and artificial colors and flavors, including diet soda varieties. In 2015, Raley’s eliminated tobacco products from stores. These decisions are in response to customers’ increased interest in food and greater concerns about their health than ever before. These improvements in the shopping experience are based on Raley’s commitment to customers.

In addition to these changes in the store experience, Raley’s has launched their “Let’s Begin” campaign in stores and on Raleys.com that helps educate customers on how to make more informed decisions when purchasing food.

Colruyt Group the first retailer to launch training programme for young graduates with leadership potential

Halle, Belgium, 2016-Nov-16 — /EPR Retail News/ — Colruyt Group is the first retailer to launch a customised training programme for young graduates with leadership potential. During “Start2Re-Tale”, sixteen young graduates will spend ten weeks from March 2017 learning about leadership, their own skills and talents, and the retail sector. Colruyt Group wants to bridge the gap between education and the labour market. The group is constantly in need of prospective managers, whilst many young graduates have difficulty finding their way around the labour market and do not always immediately think of retail. The programme requires full-time commitment from the participants. Afterwards, anyone who wants to can apply for a job within the group.

Added value for entering the labour market
Start2Re-Tale is a high quality, very wide-ranging training programme, with a combination of theory, lessons, workshops, internships and out of the box assignments in sales, logistics and support services. The participants acquire intensive knowledge about management and the retail sector within the context of Colruyt Group. They also get to know themselves better and experience whether management is for them via their talents and real life pitfalls. Either way, they are richer for this unique experience, with great added value for their first venture into the labour market. “Start2Re-Tale is an innovation in this market,” says Jan Van Holsbeke, sales division manager at OKay and the driving force behind the programme. “The programme positions itself as being somewhere between non-compulsory academic training such as postgraduate courses, and compulsory company traineeships. But it’s not necessarily a direct route to a job with us. At the end, successful participants will receive a certificate. Anyone who wants to can, of course, apply for a job within the group.”

Tailored to a specific target group
Colruyt Group has developed this route tailored to Bachelors and Masters who have the talent and ambition to lead. They must have graduated no more than two years earlier than January 2017. The group is also thinking about graduates with less obvious qualifications for the current labour market, such as in human rights for example. “They often don’t find a job immediately and also don’t really know which direction they want to take,” explains Van Holsbeke. “And they’re certainly not ready to consider possibilities within the retail sector in general or Colruyt Group in particular. With Start2Re-Tale, we want to show young people that retail is a fascinating sector with a lot of opportunities for the future, and to enhance their potential by giving a new twist to their story.”

Commitment required
The training is optional but demands strong commitment from participants. They pay €350 and must be able to make themselves available full-time for ten weeks between March 27th and June 2nd 2017. Candidates must either be Dutch-speaking or very bilingual and must be able to travel easily to Leuven. After evaluating the pilot, the group wants to roll out the programme to several locations in autumn 2017 and also offer it in French. Candidates can enroll online at https://start2retale.colruytgroup.com and, after thorough screening, they may be invited for an interview to assess their motivation and skills.

A special vision about leadership
With nearly 1,750 managers currently employed and annual vacancies for some 150 managers, Colruyt Group is ideally placed to develop a training course for prospective young managers. “We have a clear vision about leadership. Furthermore, our Colruyt Group Academy has a lot of expertise in educating and training employees. Because of this, the Academy has been able to create a unique, high quality programme for young people with leadership potential. It offers clear added value for the participants and, in the longer term, for the attractiveness of the sector,” concludes Jan Van Holsbeke.

Colson Whitehead’s novel The Underground Railroad tops Amazon’s list of Best Books of 2016

Amazon book editors reveal the 100 best books of the year, selecting titles in over two dozen categories from Literary Fiction and Mystery to Children’s & Young Adult

SEATTLE, 2016-Nov-16 — /EPR Retail News/ — Amazon.com today (Nov. 15, 2016) announced its selections for the Best Books of 2016, naming Colson Whitehead’s novel The Underground Railroad the Best Book of the Year. The annual list features the Top 100 books of the year plus Top 20 lists across various categories. All lists are hand-selected by Amazon’s team of editors who read hundreds of thousands of pages throughout the year—choosing the best books of every month and then, finally, the best books of the year. To see the full list of the Best Books of 2016 and buy the print or Kindle editions, visit: http://amazon.com/bestbooks2016

“The editorial team had a handful of books that we seriously considered for the top pick but in the end our choice of The Underground Railroad was unanimous,” said Chris Schluep, Amazon Senior Book Editor. “Colson Whitehead’s novel is timely, important, and a great work of literature.”

Here are the Amazon Editorial Team’s Top 10 picks this year:

  1. The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead: A brilliant, wise, fantastical yet grounded portrayal of a young slave seeking her freedom on a real underground railroad.
  2. The Wolf Road by Beth Lewis: Part literary thriller, part western, this is a debut novel about a young tomboy trying to survive a post-apocalyptic wilderness as she searches for her parents.
  3. Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance: A very personal tour of a segment of our culture that’s losing its way in modern America.
  4. The Nix by Nathan Hill: A big, smart novel about so many things: family, politics, revolution and the things we choose to remember (and forget).
  5. Mischling by Affinity Konar: Affinity Konar’s beautiful novel about twin sisters who survive Auschwitz is precisely crafted, acutely sensitive and ultimately uplifting and hopeful.
  6. Lab Girl by Hope Jahren: An inspiring and entertaining memoir about work, life and love from a plant scientist who is just as adept at analyzing the natural world as she is at illuminating human relationships.
  7. Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson: A poetic, breathtaking novel about growing up female and black in the 1970s—a time of conflicting pressures and sometimes crushing assumptions.
  8. Pumpkinflowers by Matti Friedman: An unforgettable nonfiction account of men changed by war, told in a voice that is both straight forward and undeniably literary.
  9. Before the Fall by Noah Hawley: From the award-winning creator of Fargo, a thrilling page-turner about an airplane crash and its seemingly heroic survivors.
  10. Swing Time by Zadie Smith: A masterful novel that tackles big issues—race, class and the ups and downs of long term friendship—told with a dancer’s grace and ease.

Here are some interesting facts about this year’s Best Books of the Year list:

  • Number of debut authors in the Top 20: 3
  • Number of science-related books in the Top 100: 6
  • Number of memoirs in the Top 100: 26
  • Number of entertainers who have authored books in the Top 100: 2
  • Number of books that were considered for the #1 spot on the list before the editors selected Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad: 4

The top picks in Children’s categories include The Night Gardener (Picture Books), The Secret Keepers (Middle Grade – ages 9-12) and The Sun is Also a Star (Young Adult). Topping the list in other popular categories is Anthony Bourdain’s Appetites (Cookbook) and David Yarrow’s Wild Encounters (Arts & Photography).

SEATTLE, 2016-Nov-16 — /EPR Retail News/ — Amazon Studios today (Nov. 14, 2016) announced One Mississippi, the critically acclaimed comedy, has been greenlit for a second season. Starring Emmy Award nominated comedian Tig Notaro (Transparent), created by Notaro and Diablo Cody (Young Adult), with Kate Robin (Six Feet Under) serving as Showrunner, One Mississippi follows Tig’s return to her hometown in Mississippi when her mother passes away unexpectedly. As she copes with the tragedy and deals with events from her past, the series becomes a poignant and surprisingly humorous exploration of family. “Making a show as comic and tragic as One Mississippi is a risk. Pulling it off with such intelligence and nuance is rare,” said Joe Lewis, Head of Comedy and Drama, Amazon Studios. “We’re grateful for the audience response and we’re excited to bring them more of Tig and Kate’s brilliance in season two.”

The first season of One Mississippi received wide critical acclaim including Variety calling it “one of the best new shows of the year” and The Hollywood Reporter dubbing the series “comedic modern art.” The New York Times touted the show as “tender, occasionally funny, often moving entertainment about the grieving process” and the Los Angeles Times said the content is “hilarious, tragic and exquisitely human.” Entertainment Weekly pronounced the show “brave and honest…finding humor in the saddest of circumstances” while The Week described it as “intelligently lyrical.”

Starbucks announces Buy One, Give One Power Lunch offer during National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week

Starbucks announces Buy One, Give One Power Lunch offer during National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
Starbucks announces Buy One, Give One Power Lunch offer during National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week

Seattle, 2016-Nov-16 — /EPR Retail News/ — Hunger exists in every county in the U.S., affecting 42 million Americans including 13 million children according to a 2016 report by the United States Department of Agriculture.

During National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Starbucks is inviting customers to purchase a Power Lunch and in return, the company will donate a Power Lunch to the Feeding America® network of local food banks.* This Buy One, Give One Power Lunch offer will be available from November 15-21 in participating Starbucks® stores across the U.S.

“Every day all around us there are people who don’t know where their next meal is coming from,” said John Kelly, senior vice president, Global Social Impact.“This offer to provide a nourishing meal to someone in need is part of a multi-year national effort by Starbucks and Feeding America to close the hunger gap.  It’s part of our role and responsibility to our communities.”

“People are more likely to give during this time of year and Starbucks support is particularly important because it amplifies and reinforces our message about hunger in our community,” said Nicole Suydam, CEO, Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, a Feeding America member food bank.

Building on an Existing Relationship

In March 2016, Starbucks announced a collaboration with Feeding America to launch Starbucks® FoodShare, a program where partners (employees) can donate ready-to-eat meals to food banks from its 7,800 company-operated stores in the U.S. Since launching a successful pilot of the program in San Diego last summer, Starbucks has added new markets including Orange County, Las Vegas, Denver and Colorado Springs. The company is scheduled to complete its rollout of Starbucks® FoodShare by 2019 and build upon the more than 345,000 nourishing meals that have been delivered to people in need to date.

“Our partners understood how important it was for us to donate surplus food back to the local community and they were the catalyst behind the FoodShare program,” said Kelly. “We were so inspired by Feeding America and all of its network partners that spend each day trying to get food to the people who need it the most. Now we can help address hunger together.”

“Launching this partnership with Starbucks has been a watershed moment for our food rescue efforts,” said Diana Aviv, CEO of Feeding America. “We are committed to identifying innovative solutions for sourcing food. Programs like FoodShare are a step in the right direction. Thanks to Starbucks contributions, more families and children will have access to a variety of nutrient-rich food.”

The Power of Lunch

Based on its relationship with Feeding America, Starbucks determined that it could do even more to get food to those in need by introducing the Power Lunch Buy One, Give One offer and encouraging customers to participate.

“We have a quality lunch menu that we’re pleased to provide to our customers and with this offer, we can donate nourishing meals to families in need as well,” said Ka Bao Lee, product manager Starbucks Lunch. “With Thanksgiving upon us, we think this is a particularly impactful time for such an effort.”

Although the offer lasts for one week, the lunches will be donated over a 90-day period. This will allow for a continuous flow of nourishing Starbucks meals that will meet the needs of local food banks for several weeks. Starbucks anticipates donating at least 50,000 Power Lunches with the help of its customers.

“The additional food from the Power Lunches will help our agencies feed children, families and seniors at a time when there are many demands on financial resources and when people are often unable to find enough food for their next meal,” Suydam said.

*Donations will be distributed in California, New York, Arizona and Colorado. Learn more at www.feedingamerica.org.

Carrefour Brazil opens its 50th Carrefour Express store in Sao Paulo

Sao Paulo,Brazil, 2016-Nov-16 — /EPR Retail News/ — On 10 November, Carrefour Brazil unveiled the latest branch of its convenience store format. The opening in Sao Paulo of the 50th Carrefour Express store reinforces the company’s investment in a sector that offers customers improved levels of flexibility and comfort, focusing on a daily range of fresh and ready-to-consume items. The new store is located within the Metrô Tucuruvi mall, in the city’s northern sector. It is the network’s fourth store to be opened in a shopping centre, following those already located in Shopping Metrópole (in São Bernardo do Campo, SP), and CENESP (Centro Empresarial São Paulo) and Mais Shopping in the state capital.

The Express brand further diversifies the services offered by Carrefour Brazil, enabling the group to meet the growing demand among customers for quicker visits to stores located in the vicinity of their homes or the workplace. Macy’s launches The Santa Project, a nationwide movement to fill Internet with positive affirmations of belief

Macy’s aims to curtail Internet cynicism by filling it with optimistic expressions of belief this holiday season

NEW YORK, 2016-Nov-16 — /EPR Retail News/ — As part of its annual Believe campaign, Macy’s today (Nov. 14, 2016) launches The Santa Project, a nationwide movement to fill the Internet with positive affirmations of belief. Macy’s is calling on people of all ages to post a photo, message or video with #SantaProject via Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or YouTube to show their beliefs. A selection of responses will be featured in a Macy’s television commercial coming this December.

“The story of Virginia O’Hanlon and the importance of believing have been the inspiration behind our iconic holiday campaign for the past eight years,” said Joe Feczko, senior vice president of brand marketing for Macy’s. “This season, we want to do everything we can to boost the spirit of Santa for future generations. When you look at the Internet right now, there is a lot of negativity out there. We’re asking people to come together this Christmas to flood the Internet with a groundswell of positivity that preserves belief for kids everywhere.”

About The Santa Project

The magic of Santa has been shared by word of mouth for generations and then spread through books, film and television. Today, the Internet provides an influential channel to continue this legacy. Children have unparalleled access to the most expansive breadth of information of any generation at the touch of their fingertips, and they turn to the Internet for answers. When inquiring about Santa, the answer is not so nice.

Macy’s is on a mission to change that. Starting this month, Macy’s is encouraging people to flood the Internet with expressions of belief in Santa and the Christmas spirit. By sharing a response that captures the importance of believing and what Santa means to them, everyone can play a role in keeping the magic of the holidays alive and ensuring that the Internet is a place where Santa lives on for future generations.

The Santa Project comes to life in a short film featuring children as they discuss what it means to believe in Santa. In addition, a television commercial, inviting America to respond, will air during Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade®, the official kick-off to the holiday season.

About The Research

The Santa Project conducted national quantitative and qualitative research investigating the importance of belief in Santa and the current state of belief across the country.

According to a recent Ipsos survey, two out of three people with kids in the home (66 percent) think it is important to believe in Santa (54 percent for all U.S. adults). However, 44 percent of U.S. adults think that belief is decreasing, versus just 8 percent who think it is increasing.

According to Dr. Jacqueline Woolley, leading expert in the field of child psychology, studies have shown that belief improves creativity and imagination, while also strengthening critical thinking.

“The kind of thinking involved in imagining how reindeer could fly through the sky is the same kind of thinking required for imagining solutions to today’s biggest problems,” Woolley said. “This kind of thinking — engaging the border between what is possible and what is impossible — is at the root of all scientific discoveries and inventions, from airplanes to the Internet.”

An additional qualitative study, commissioned by Macy’s, was conducted with 40 children, ages six- to nine- years-old, to study belief in Santa. Interviews showed that belief in Santa can build family traditions and rituals, and instill ideas of morality and generosity.

Join The Santa Project

Here’s how to get involved:

  1. Create a response that will help fill the Internet with belief, in the form of a short message, photo or video on why you believe in Santa and the spirit of the holiday season (filmed via smartphone, held sideways in landscape format)
  2. Post on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or YouTube with #SantaProject
  3. Encourage your family and friends to join the movement and spread the spirit of belief

Select video responses will be featured in a Macy’s television spot in December.

The Santa Project is part of Macy’s Believe campaign, which benefits Make-A-Wish®. Customers can drop their letters to Santa at Macy’s or send digitally at macys.com/believe. For every letter collected in-store or online, Macy’s will donate $1, up to $1 million, to Make-A-Wish, the organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.

To learn more about The Santa Project, visit macys.com/believe. Visitors can view a counter that will keep track of expressions of belief being spread throughout the holiday season, including an updated list of Top 10 states in the country that are showing the most belief via social media, letters to Santa, visits to Santa at Macy’s Santaland, and visits to macys.com/believe.

The Santa Project was created by Macy’s in partnership with Figliulo&Partners.

Ipsos Methodology

This survey was conducted by Ipsos on Oct. 28, 2016, on behalf of Macy’s. For the survey, a sample of 1,006 U.S. adults over the age of 18 was interviewed online, in English, including 328 adults who have children under the age of 18. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points for all respondents surveyed, and 6.2 percentage points for parents.

IKEA to install solar panels on its distribution center in Joliet; Illinois’ largest solar rooftop installation

CONSHOHOCKEN, PA, 2016-Nov-16 — /EPR Retail News/ — IKEA, the world’s leading home furnishings retailer, today (11/15/2016) announced plans to install solar panels on its Midwest distribution center under construction in Joliet, IL. Installation will begin in Spring 2017, with completion expected in Fall 2017 for Illinois’ largest rooftop array. Combined with arrays atop the Chicago-area IKEA stores in Bolingbrook and Schaumburg, this third project will make IKEA owner of three of the state’s largest solar rooftop installations. (The renewable energy portfolio of IKEA in Illinois also includes a 49-turbine wind farm in Hoopeston, IL)

The distribution center’s 470,545-square-foot solar array will consist of a 2.91 MW system, built with 8,966 panels, and will produce approximately 3,411,600 kWh of electricity annually for the facility, the equivalent of reducing 2,398 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) – equal to the emissions of 506 cars or providing electricity for 354 homes yearly (calculating clean energy equivalents at www.epa.gov/energy/greenhouse-gas-equivalencies-calculator).

For the development, design and installation of the facility’s solar power system, IKEA selected SoCore Energy, a wholly owned, indirect subsidiary of Edison International that has designed and installed hundreds of solar solutions across 21 states. Gray Construction is managing the construction of the Joliet distribution center, which will receive and inventory goods sold at IKEA stores worldwide.

“We are excited to further our sustainability commitment with solar panels on our future Midwest distribution center,” said Lars Peterson, IKEA U.S. president. “Installing Illinois’ largest rooftop array advances our vision of creating a better everyday life for the many.”

IKEA, drawing from its Swedish heritage and respect of nature, believes it can do good business while minimizing impacts on the environment. This installation will represent the 45th solar project for IKEA in the United States, contributing to the IKEA solar presence atop nearly 90% of its U.S. locations, with a total generation of more than 40 MW. IKEA owns and operates each of its solar PV energy systems atop its buildings – as opposed to a solar lease or PPA (power purchase agreement) – and globally has allocated $2.5 billion to invest in renewable energy through 2020, reinforcing its confidence and investment in solar photovoltaic technology. Consistent with the goal of being energy independent by 2020, IKEA has installed more than 700,000 solar panels on buildings across the world and owns approximately 300 wind turbines, including 104 in the U.S. – 49 of which are in Hoopeston, IL.

Under construction on 72 acres at the Laraway Crossings Business Park, the future 1.25-million-square-foot distribution center in Joliet will enhance the IKEA distribution network with a central location allowing goods to be received at coastal ports from both Asia and Europe and then transported inland to the Joliet facility. The proximity to a nearby railroad intermodal will represent additional long-term transportation options too. IKEA also is planning another, similarly-sized facility on 62 acres adjacent to the one currently being built. (The timing for construction of the second building remains to be determined.

Since its 1943 founding in Sweden, IKEA has offered home furnishings of good design and function at low prices so the majority of people can afford them. There are currently more than 380 IKEA stores in 48 countries, including 42 in the U.S., where there also are five operating distribution centers. IKEA has been ranked among “Best Companies to Work For” and, as further investment in its coworkers, has raised its own minimum wage twice in two years. IKEA incorporates sustainability into day-to-day business and supports initiatives that benefit children and the environment. Marine Agrifuture recalls “Kahuku Ogo”, “Robusta Ogo” and “Kahuku Sea Asparagus” due to potential contamination of Salmonella

Marine Agrifuture recalls “Kahuku Ogo”, “Robusta Ogo” and "Kahuku Sea Asparagus" due to potential contamination of Salmonella
Marine Agrifuture recalls “Kahuku Ogo”, “Robusta Ogo” and “Kahuku Sea Asparagus” due to potential contamination of Salmonella

Kahuku, HI, 2016-Nov-16 — /EPR Retail News/ — Marine Agrifuture, LLC. of Kahuku, HI, is recalling its “Kahuku Ogo”, “Robusta Ogo” and  “Kahuku Sea Asparagus” because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The recalled “Kahuku Ogo”, “Robusta Ogo”, and  “Kahuku Sea Asparagus” were distributed mainly in Hawaii to Seafood and Produce Distributors through direct delivery, but also to some customers in CA, WA, NV, and Tokyo Japan, and retailed at local Farmers Markets in Hawaii.

The Ogo products come in a plastic bag of various weights from 0.5 LB to 35 LB, which were sold from November 2, 2016 and prior, and the Sea Asparagus in 4 Ounce, 1 LB clear plastic clamshell or in a 5 LB of plastic bag marked with a tracking number stamped on the lids or bags, which were sold from November 8, 2016 and prior. The corresponding UPC number for 4 OZ, 1 LB, and 5 LB of sea asparagus are 897680001010, 897680001027, and 897680001041 respectively.

Fourteen cases of Salmonella on Oahu have been reported to date in connection with this problem. The potential for contamination was noted after special tests by the Hawaii Department of Health revealed the presence of Salmonella in saltwater in the farm production and processing areas.

Production of the product has been suspended while FDA and the company continue their investigation as to what caused the problem.

Seafood and Produce companies that have purchased Kahuku Ogo, Robusta Ogo, and Kahuku Sea Asparagus described above are urged to stop using or selling or further distributing these products, to disposal of the products, and to have them let us know the amount that was destroyed for credit and reconciliation for your recall. Consumers who have purchased 1 LB or 0.5 LB package of Kahuku Ogo, Robusta Ogo, and 4 OZ package of Kahuku Sea Asparagus at Farmers Markets are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Toys“R”Us adds St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® to its charitable causes in this season of giving

WAYNE, NJ, 2016-Nov-16 — /EPR Retail News/ — The holiday season is all about showing thanks and embracing the spirit of giving. And with that, Toys“R”Us® is joining St. Jude in its Thanks and Giving® campaign through a financial commitment from the Toys”R”Us Children’s Fund, a public charity affiliated with the company, to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®.

This is the first year Toys“R”Us will join celebrities, media, and more than 70 of the nation’s leading brands and companies that unite to raise funds and awareness for the campaign. These funds are critical given that no family ever receives a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.

Apple announces conservation efforts to protect working forests in the United States

Apple announces conservation efforts to protect working forests in the United States

Cupertino, California, 2016-Nov-16 — /EPR Retail News/ — Apple today (NOVEMBER 14, 2016) announced important progress in its efforts to protect working forests in the United States. The company, in partnership with The Conservation Fund, is donating the conservation easement across more than 32,400 acres of working forest in the US — the Reed Forest in Maine — to the Forest Society of Maine. Apple is also supporting the Fund’s donation of an endowment to the Forest Society of Maine, which will ensure that the easement can be monitored and enforced for centuries to come.

Apple recognizes forests are a tremendous natural resource, and is committed to minimizing its impact by sourcing paper responsibly and using it as efficiently as possible. The company is working to protect and create enough responsibly managed forests around the world to cover all its packaging needs and produce fiber for generations. In 2015, Apple launched a partnership with The Conservation Fund to protect 36,000 acres of sustainable forest in the Eastern United States through the use of conservation easements, which help ensure the working forests remain forests. Apple is also partnering with World Wildlife Fund in China to transition up to one million acres of forest into responsible management by 2020.

The conservation easement ensures forests at Reed won’t be developed or converted to other uses, and helps promote economical and ecologically-sustainable production of fiber and other wood products. The easement also guarantees recreational activities in the forests, and requires forest harvest plans to address water quality, native fish and wildlife habitat, soil productivity, recreational values, scenic benefits, an enduring forest and other conservation values.

Located along the Mattawamkeag River in Aroostook County, Reed Forest connects more than a million acres of conserved lands and interconnected forest habit that extend beyond the US border into Canada. Maine’s forests provide important habitat for species such as the Atlantic salmon, bald eagle, northern goshawk and Canada lynx.
