Amazon.com to open its third Nevada fulfillment center in North Las Vegas

Amazon’s new North Las Vegas facility will create more than 1,000 new full-time jobs

SEATTLE, 2016-Nov-24 — /EPR Retail News/ — Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) today (Nov. 22, 2016) announced plans to open its third Nevada fulfillment center in North Las Vegas. Amazon currently employs more than 1,500 full-time hourly associates at its two existing Nevada fulfillment centers in Reno and North Las Vegas, and plans to create more than 1,000 new positions at its second North Las Vegas facility.

“Our ability to expand Nevada operations is the result of two things: incredible customers and an outstanding workforce in the state,” said Akash Chauhan, Amazon’s Vice President of North American Operations. “We are excited to expand in Nevada by growing our team, creating good jobs and partnering with members of the southern Nevada community.”

“In April of last year, I was proud to be a part of the grand opening of Amazon’s Reno fulfillment center, where I was amazed by the technology, innovation and job creation Amazon brings to Nevada,” said Governor Brian Sandoval. “Today’s announcement is terrific news for our state. By continuing to expand in Nevada, Amazon is not only meeting the needs of its customers but also Nevadans by creating more than 1,000 full-time, permanent jobs, offering generous tuition assistance and a focus on veteran and military hiring.”

Amazon employees at the 800,000-square-foot North Las Vegas fulfillment center will pick, pack and ship larger customer items, such as big-screen televisions, kayaks and patio furniture.

“Amazon’s exciting investment in our city highlights all of the opportunities available in North Las Vegas and is a testament to our easy business practices and motivated workforce,” North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee said. “I’m thrilled to partner with such a progressive and caring company that has donated Kindle devices to our schoolchildren and helped paint an elementary school. I’m thrilled Amazon has chosen North Las Vegas as the site for its newest venture, and I look forward to a long ongoing partnership.”

Full-time employees at Amazon receive competitive hourly wages and a comprehensive benefits package, including healthcare, 401(k) and company stock awards, starting on day one. Amazon also offers regular full-time employees maternity and parental leave benefits and access to innovative programs like Career Choice, where it will pre-pay up to 95 percent of tuition for courses related to in-demand fields, regardless of whether the skills are relevant to a career at Amazon. Since the program’s launch, employees are pursuing degrees in game design and visual communications, nursing, IT programming, and radiology, to name a few.

“Amazon’s decision to build its newest fulfillment center in North Las Vegas is a very exciting announcement for Clark County and the City of North Las Vegas,” said Clark County Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick. “Not only is Amazon one of the world’s most recognizable companies, we have seen here in the County and elsewhere in Nevada that they are a strong corporate partner who is committed to giving back in the communities where they have facilities. That, on top of the job opportunities Amazon will deliver to the residents of our region, make this a very significant announcement for our community.”

“This announcement is a major lift to the economy of Southern Nevada and shows the power of what can happen when our state and local governments work together,” said Jonas Peterson, CEO and President of the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance. “Our region offers a unique competitive advantage for companies looking to reach the Southwestern U.S. and take advantage of our robust highway transportation network. We’re pleased that Amazon has chosen to expand in Nevada and proud to have supported them in the process.”
