Pranayama yoga is a kind of yoga that focuses on managing and changing the breath, or the life force energy (prana) in the body. Pranayama yoga can have many good things for the body, mind, and spirit of the person who does it, such as making stress less, making lung work better, making focus better, and making relaxation more.
Pranayama yoga has different breath ways that have three parts: breathing in (puraka), holding (kumbhaka), and breathing out (rechaka). Some of the usual pranayama ways are:
- Nadi Shodhana: Also called different nose breathing, this way makes the flow of prana in the two main energy paths (nadis) in the body, the ida and the pingala, even. It means breathing in and out through one nose hole at a time, while closing the other nose hole with the thumb or the ring finger.
- Ujjayi: Also called winning breath, this way makes a soft sound in the throat by making the glottis a little smaller. It helps to make the mind quiet, make the body warm, and make the oxygen more.
- Kapalabhati: Also called skull bright breath, this way means strong and quick breaths out, followed by easy breaths in. It helps to clean the lungs, nose holes, and breathing system, as well as make the stomach parts and the sun place work better.
- Bhastrika: Also called air bag breath, this way means strong and steady breaths in and out, using the stomach wall and the chest muscles. It helps to make the body active, make the body change rate more, and make the mind clear.
- Bhramari: Also called bee breath, this way means making a buzzing sound while breathing out, with the mouth shut and the ears closed with the fingers. It helps to make the nerves calm, make worry less, and make the sleep better.
Pranayama yoga can be done by anyone, no matter how old, experienced, or fit they are. However, it is good to ask a doctor before starting pranayama yoga, especially if one has any health problems, hurts, or things they are allergic to that may change the breathing. It is also good to do pranayama yoga with the help of a good teacher, who can give right directions and comments. Pranayama yoga should be done on an empty stomach, better in the morning or evening, in a nice and quiet place. Pranayama yoga is a strong and deep way that can change one’s life by joining the body, mind, and spirit.
