CVS Health brings its safe medication disposal program to South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C., 2018-Jan-26 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) announced today (January 23, 2018) that the company has expanded its safe medication disposal program to locations inside select CVS Pharmacy locations in South Carolina to help facilitate proper and timely disposal of opioids and other medications that could be diverted or misused if left in people’s homes. Attorney General Alan Wilson, State Representative Chip Huggins and Lexington Police Chief Terrence Green attended the launch of the program at a Lexington CVS Pharmacy location.

“With a presence in nearly 10,000 communities across the country, we see firsthand the impact of the alarming and rapidly growing epidemic of opioid addiction and misuse,” said Thomas M. Moriarty, Executive Vice President, Chief Policy and External Affairs Officer, and General Counsel, CVS Health. “Expanding our safe medication disposal efforts here in South Carolina is an extension of the initiatives in place across our company to fight the opioid abuse epidemic and fulfill our purpose of helping people on their path to better health.”

The 22 new medication disposal units that will be installed inside CVS Pharmacy locations in South Carolina will supplement the nearly 24 units CVS Health has donated to police and sheriff departments across the state. Nationwide, the company has donated more than 800 units to police departments, collecting more than 125 metric tons, or 270,000 pounds of unwanted medication.

“We know that opioids and other dangerous drugs often end up in the wrong hands after being taken out of parents’ and grandparents’ medicine cabinets,” said Attorney General Wilson. “We appreciate CVS’s efforts to help fight the opioid epidemic by giving people a safe and easy way to dispose of unwanted medications.”

“Prescription drug abuse is a major public health epidemic in our state,” said State Representative Chip Huggins, who is a member of the House Opioid Abuse Prevention Study Committee. “Programs like the one CVS Health is announcing today are integral in helping to avoid the diversion of unused prescription medicines, which can help reduce and prevent their misuse.”

The expansion of safe medication disposal to a total of 750 CVS Pharmacy locations across the U.S. was included among the enhancements to the company’s strategy to address and prevent opioid abuse announced in September 2017. As part of that effort, the company also said it would enhance opioid utilization management aligned with the CDC Guideline for CVS Caremark clients and members, complementing measures already in place. This work builds on ongoing programs the company operates including the Pharmacists Teach program, which brings CVS Pharmacists to local schools to talk to teens and parents about the dangers of abusing prescription drugs. More than 300,000 teens nationally including more than 4,000 in South Carolina have already participated in the program. CVS Health has also worked to expand access to the opioid overdose-reversal drug naloxone in 46 states, including South Carolina.

“We see the impact that opioid abuse has on our community every day,” said Terrence Green, Chief of Police of the Lexington Police Department. “We commend CVS Health for this important step in helping combat the opioid epidemic by making it easier for this community and others throughout the state to dispose of their unused medicines.”

Tops Friendly Markets introduces Better For You packages in its bulk department

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y., 2018-Jan-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — As American’s are becoming more and more health conscious, retailers are finding customers are buying less food items in bulk and are becoming more conservative in their portion sizes. This shift to “less is more” can prove to be a challenge especially for a store team whose emphasis is the bulk department.

In an effort to not only adapt to the changing needs of the customer but to also stay abreast of the latest store trends in maximizing space while still providing a bulk option, last year Tops Friendly Markets director of edible grocery, Keith McFayden and his team took a step back and analyzed how they could accomplish both challenges with one solution.

“When we looked at the task at hand we found we could still offer our customers the items that they wanted, but be more efficient in how we went about doing so,” said McFayden. “By offering them a variety of “Better For You” portion size containers versus an endless bin with a bag and scooper, consumers can now feel confident in knowing the exact serving size, calories, and evaluate the nutritional facts.”

Better For You packages vary in size ranging from 6oz to 21oz and offer a different approach to what customers are looking for. Ideal for snacking on the go, these new packages were designed to not only contain healthy bulk food items like banana chips and locally roasted snack nuts, but also more indulgent items like locally produced chocolate covered products which better align with consumer trends as well. Additionally the change brought an expansion of organic items into the bulk section with now over 20 items being offered.

From a retail space perspective, the traditional plastic bins that were previously used took up significantly more space. Once store implementation is completed, this new approach will reduce bin size by 47.0%. The goal is to implement 12 foot tub sections (where space exist), which will allow Tops to fully merchandise the enhanced assortment.

“This new approach allows us to be more versatile,” said McFayden. “Products can be interspersed throughout the store – whether it’s on a display near a complimentary item or near the checkout, we now have the ability to have the ready to go containers available at a customer’s fingertips.”

While not all of the TOPS stores have converted their bulk departments over to the new ready to go containers, 60 of the 169 stores have already undergone the implementation with the remaining on the horizon for the balance of 2018.

Tops Markets, LLC, is headquartered in Williamsville, NY and operates 169 full-service supermarkets with five additional by franchisees under the Tops banner. Tops employs more than 15,000 associates and is a leading full-service grocery retailer in New York, northern Pennsylvania, and western Vermont. CVS Health recognized by FORTUNE magazine as one of the World’s Most Admired Companies

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2018-Jan-22 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), the nation’s largest pharmacy innovation company, today was recognized by FORTUNE magazine as one of the World’s Most Admired Companies. CVS Health was honored as No. 39 on the corporate rankings, up six spots from the previous year and marking the fourth consecutive year on the Global Top 50 list.

FORTUNE’s Most Admired Companies lists are among the most highly respected indicators of corporate performance and reputation, and rate companies on various attributes including the ability to attract and retain talented people, quality of products and services, quality of management, innovation, social responsibility, and investment value.

“As a purpose-driven, innovative health care company, we are always seeking to do the right thing for our customers, colleagues, clients and communities,” said Larry J. Merlo, CVS Health President and CEO. “We are proud that our work and performance has once again been recognized by FORTUNE, as we continue to deliver on our purpose of helping people on their path to better health.”

Over the past year, CVS Health has taken a number of steps to strengthen the health of communities across the country, including helping to solve for the nation’s opioid crisis. In 2017, the company announced it would enhance opioid utilization management protocols, install 750 new drug disposal collection units in its retail pharmacies to collect unwanted medication and continue the Pharmacist Teach program, which brings CVS pharmacists into schools to educate students on the dangers of prescription drugs.

To address the rising costs of prescription drugs, the company began offering a less expensive epinephrine auto-injector, generic Adrenaclick, for patients with life-threatening allergies in 2017. At the same time, CVS Pharmacy removed artificial trans-fats from all store brand products and will be removing chemicals of concern from nearly 600 store brand beauty and personal care items by 2019.

CVS Health is also recognized as a leading corporate citizen across the country. In the midst of hurricanes, floods, tornadoes and wildfires, CVS Health and its employees went above and beyond to ensure patients received the medications they needed, responded to the call for community help with $10 million is relief and recovery support, and assisted their own colleagues by giving to the company’s Employee Relief Fund.

Beyond disaster relief, CVS Health supports local communities in many different ways. Through corporate giving and the CVS Health Foundation, communities across the country benefited in 2017 from the more than $100 million in grants, in-kind product donations and other community investments to deliver affordable quality health care, provide chronic disease management and promote smoking cessation and youth tobacco prevention.

This recognition is the latest in a series of third-party acknowledgments for CVS Health, including DiversityInc’s Top 50 Companies for Diversity, Points of Light’s Top 50 Community-Minded Companies, Corporate Responsibility Magazine’s 100 Best Corporate Citizens, Human Rights Campaign’s Top Places to Work for LGBT Equality and the Disability Equality Index’s Top Places to Work.

CVS Health introduces Transform Rheumatoid Arthritis Care program to improve both clinical care and cost management for RA

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2018-Jan-18 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) today introduced Transform Rheumatoid Arthritis Care to help the company’s pharmacy benefit management (PBM) clients better manage care and costs for Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). The program is the latest addition to the company’s suite of condition-specific, highly personalized Transform Care programs and adds value-based management strategies including outcomes based contracts and a new indication-based formulary for autoimmune conditions to CVS Health’s integrated pharmacy care model. Given that the cost and utilization of drugs to treat RA are a top drug trend and spend driver, accounting for nearly half of overall specialty drug trend, this new multi-pronged approach also includes a trend guarantee based on the program’s ability to improve both clinical care and cost management for RA.

“Rheumatoid arthritis is a complex condition and is one of the top drivers of specialty drug trend for our PBM clients,” said Troyen A. Brennan, M.D., executive vice president and chief medical officer of CVS Health. “By leveraging our integrated pharmacy care model, we can provide highly personalized, whole-patient support through our specialty pharmacy and embedded AccordantCare nurses, while harnessing the power of our PBM’s tools to encourage appropriate use of and adherence to lower cost therapies.”

The Transform RA Care program is designed to help encourage appropriate use of lower-cost therapies through pharmacy network and utilization management tools along with value-based management strategies such as outcomes-based contracts and a new indication-based formulary for autoimmune conditions. Outcomes-based contracts tie reimbursement for a drug to achieving a specific target or goal. If the target is not met for instance if the patient discontinues therapy, indicating the drug was not well tolerated the manufacturer may be required to provide additional value. In addition, the indication-based approach determines formulary placement for drugs based on the specific diagnosis rather than for the therapy class as a whole. This multi-pronged approach is designed to help clients better manage trend and receive a trend guarantee for these expensive drugs.

“Treating Rheumatoid Arthritis costs the U.S. health care system $19 billion a year. Both spend and trend have also been rising for the autoimmune category in recent years and market analysts expect this category to be the fastest-growing drug class over the next five years,” said Alan Lotvin, M.D., executive vice president of CVS Specialty, the specialty pharmacy of CVS Health. “Our program is unique in that we can pull together resources enabled by our integrated pharmacy care model to deliver both a truly member-focused clinical management program while also helping to manage the rising costs within the autoimmune category through new approaches to contracting and formulary management.”

Members enrolled in Transform RA Care will continue to receive proactive, personalized care and disease-specific expertise from the RA CareTeam, a team of specially-trained pharmacists and Accordant nurses in our RA Center of Excellence. The RA CareTeam provides a range of support specific to the member’s needs including symptom, comorbidity and side effect management; care coordination; and coaching and education. The RA CareTeam also offers initial clinical assessments, benefits verification and medication dispensing and distribution. In addition, proactive patient outreach can help improve engagement rates, improve adherence to medication, and reduce complications, such as hospital and emergency room visits. Members with RA also have access to innovative digital tools to help them start and stay on their therapies and, through Specialty Connect, the ability to pick up their medication at a local CVS Pharmacy or have it delivered to their home or office by mail.

Clients enrolled in the Transform RA Care program could expect to see savings of up to 5 percent on their annual spend for RA drugs. For example a client that manages 100,000 lives could see up to $500,000 in annual savings.

RA is the second most common form of arthritis, impacting more than 1.5 million people in the U.S. It is characterized by chronic inflammation of the joints and, over time, can lead to bone deformation. The disease is also complex and hard to manage, and our research shows that approximately one quarter of patients who start on an autoimmune drug discontinue therapy within 180 days, which can lead to poor health outcomes and higher costs for payors and members. Those with RA can benefit from holistic disease management, which can help improve medication adherence, address gaps in care, and reduce condition-related complications and visits to the hospital and ER. In addition, cost management strategies can create additional value for both payors and patients.

Walmart launches a first-of-its kind opioid disposal solution — DisposeRx

Walmart launches a first-of-its kind opioid disposal solution — DisposeRx

Retailer first national pharmacy chain to offer free opioid disposal solution at all pharmacy locations

BENTONVILLE, Ark., 2018-Jan-17 — /EPR Retail News/ — In an effort to help curb abuse and misuse, Walmart is launching a first-of-its kind opioid disposal solution – available at no cost – in all company pharmacies.* Known as DisposeRx, the small packet contains ingredients that, according to the manufacturer, when emptied into a pill bottle with warm water, ultimately enable patients to responsibly dispose of leftover medications in their trash.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the National Institute of Drug Abuse, more than 65 percent of people misusing prescription opioids are getting them from family and friends, and personal prescriptions are one of the main sources of nonmedical opioid abuse. DisposeRx provides a virtually effortless way for patients to destroy leftover opioids and a way to do so without ever leaving home.

The innovative disposal solution will now be provided in addition to ongoing counseling available to Walmart patients on proper opioid use when filling an opioid prescription at any one of its 4,700 pharmacies nationwide. Now, pharmacists can also counsel patients on how to use DisposeRx and distribute an opioid awareness brochure outlining risks and helpful resources.

“The health and safety of our patients is a critical priority; that’s why we’re taking an active role in fighting our nation’s opioid issue – an issue that has affected so many families and communities across America,” said Marybeth Hays, executive vice president of Consumables and Health and Wellness at Walmart U.S. “While this issue requires many resources to solve, we are confident this unique, easy-to-use disposal solution, DisposeRx, will make a meaningful impact on the lives of many. Walmart is incredibly proud to fund this initiative that provides our patients with an opioid disposal solution they can access nationwide, at no cost.”

According to DisposeRx, packets contain a crosslinking polymer blend that, when added to the pill bottle with warm water, sequester any form of prescription drugs – including powders, pills, tablets, capsules, liquids or patches – into a non-divertible and biodegradable gel. The chemicals in the packet are listed as safe by the FDA.

Beginning immediately, patients filling any new Class II opioid prescription at Walmart pharmacies will receive a free DisposeRx packet and opioid safety information brochure when picking up their prescription. Patients with chronic Class II opioid prescriptions will be offered a free DisposeRx packet every six months. Existing pharmacy patients can also request a free DisposeRx packet at any time, including at the upcoming Walmart Wellness Day event on January 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. local time at all Walmart locations nationwide. Additionally, Sam’s Club patients can access Dispose Rx at their pharmacies.

“About one-third of medications sold go unused. Too often, these dangerous narcotics remain unsecured where children, teens or visitors may have access. I commend Walmart for taking this innovative approach to help keep unused prescription drugs out of the wrong hands,” said Sen. John Boozman, R-Ark.

The launch of DisposeRx in Walmart and Sam’s Club pharmacies is one of several ways the retailers are helping to address the prescription drug abuse problem. The company urges lawmakers to establish a seven-day supply limit for initial prescriptions issued for acute pain and to require all controlled substance prescriptions be issued electronically, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration. It stocks Naloxone in its pharmacies and will offer Naloxone behind its pharmacy counters for sale or for dispensing by a pharmacist by the end of this month in all states where pharmacy practice laws support its ability to do so. The company also believes education on prescription drug abuse is a key part of the solution and is helping to fund a variety of multi-state programs that teach youth about the dangers of prescription drug use and abuse.

As part of this initiative, transparency for beauty imagery that has been materially altered will be required by the end of 2020.

The company also announced that it will introduce the “CVS Beauty Mark,” a watermark that will be used to highlight imagery that has not been materially altered. For this initiative, materially altered is defined as changing or enhancing a person’s shape, size, proportion, skin or eye color, wrinkles or any other individual characteristics. CVS Pharmacy will be working together with key brand partners and industry experts to develop specific guidelines in an effort to ensure consistency and transparency.

“As a woman, mother and president of a retail business whose customers predominantly are women, I realize we have a responsibility to think about the messages we send to the customers we reach each day,” said Helena Foulkes, President of CVS Pharmacy and Executive Vice President, CVS Health. “The connection between the propagation of unrealistic body images and negative health effects, especially in girls and young women, has been established. As a purpose-led company, we strive to do our best to assure all of the messages we are sending to our customers reflect our purpose of helping people on their path to better health.”

This new initiative is being introduced in an effort to lead positive change around transparency in beauty as well as to allow customers to differentiate between authentic and materially altered imagery. The CVS Beauty Mark will start to appear on CVS Pharmacy-produced beauty imagery in 2018 with the goal of all images in the beauty sections of CVS Pharmacy stores reflecting transparency by the end of 2020.

“We’ve reached out to many of our beauty brand partners, many of whom are already thinking about this important issue, to work together to ensure that the beauty aisle is a place that represents and celebrates the authenticity and diversity of the communities we serve,” Foulkes added. “We’ve been inspired by their willingness to partner with us to redefine industry standards around this important issue for the well-being of all of our customers.”

“Girls Inc. applauds CVS Pharmacy’s leadership commitment to showcase and celebrate beauty in all of its forms. As the national nonprofit dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold, Girls Inc. is honored to be a partner in CVS Pharmacy’s movement to counter limiting stereotypes too often faced by girls and women. Allowing diversity and natural beauty to shine will have an immensely positive impact on girls and women everywhere.” said Judy Vredenburgh, Girls Inc. President & CEO.

CVS Health has previously made significant changes in its retail stores with the health of its customers in mind, such as ending the sale of tobacco products, delivering healthier food options throughout CVS Pharmacy stores and committing to remove certain chemicals of concern from all store brand beauty and personal care items by 2019.

“Little Helps for healthier living” partnership: British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, Diabetes UK and Tesco partner to help tackle the biggest health challenges

“Little Helps for healthier living” partnership: British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, Diabetes UK and Tesco partner to help tackle the biggest health challenges

Welwyn Garden City, UK, 2018-Jan-10 — /EPR Retail News/ — Three of the UK’s leading health charities have today come together with the UK’s leading food retailer to help tackle the nation’s biggest health challenges.

The partnership, “Little Helps for healthier living”, will bring together the skills and expertise of the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, Diabetes UK and Tesco to help lower the risk of heart and circulatory disease, cancer and Type 2 diabetes.

Over the next five years, the four organisations will work together to help Tesco’s 300,000 UK colleagues and millions of UK shoppers by removing barriers to healthier habits. Since 2015, Tesco shopping baskets have got healthier each year, and the new partnership will aim to speed up this progress with Little Helps that make a lasting difference to Britain’s shopping baskets.

A key starting point for this work will be to establish the UK’s leading workplace health programme, helping Tesco colleagues to be at their best at work and at home. The workplace health programme will build on a series of steps taken by Tesco over the last 12 months, including healthy deals and discounts, free health checks, and a growing focus on supporting the mental health of colleagues.

The four organisations have pledged to share the findings from their work across the wider UK health community to help accelerate progress towards national and international public health goals. The aim is to bring about a measurable improvement to the health of the nation, by developing Little Helps that make a healthy difference to shopping baskets all over Britain.

Speaking ahead of the launch of the new partnership, Dave Lewis, Chief Executive of Tesco, said:

“I’m really excited by what we’re announcing today. This is a unique partnership, which will bring together the skills and expertise of the UK’s leading health charities and the UK’s leading food retailer to help tackle the biggest health challenges facing the nation.

Together with the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, and Diabetes UK, we want to help people take small steps on their own terms to develop healthier habits. It’s about unlocking the energy, expertise and reach of our different organisations to develop little helps that make healthy differences across the whole country.”

Simon Gillespie, Chief Executive of the British Heart Foundation, said:

“This unique partnership has the potential to significantly lower the risk of some of the UK’s deadliest diseases. Working together, we can create initiatives that inspire people to take steps to change their behaviour. Measuring the impact of these initiatives could also pave the way for new and innovative strategies for empowering staff and communities to take control of their health in ways that can be adopted across the country.”

Sir Harpal Kumar, Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK, said:

“This is a landmark moment in our relationship with Tesco, which has already run for an incredible 16 years. This new partnership has the potential to transform the health of millions of people. We’re excited about the opportunity to engage Tesco colleagues and customers across the UK to increase awareness of cancer and encourage simple lifestyle changes that can help lower their risk of the disease.

The partnership builds on the success of Tesco’s longstanding commitment to Race for Life, which has already encouraged millions of women to get active across the country.”

Chris Askew, Chief Executive of Diabetes UK, said:

“This powerful new partnership has the potential to meet, head on, some of the biggest health challenges facing people living in the UK today.

Today is an exciting day: Together, we’ll be able to reach the millions of people at risk of Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer, and help them make positive changes to their health in a way we’d never have been able to do working alone.”

Over the next five years, the new partnership will help to encourage and support sustainable, measurable changes in behaviour, through a series of targeted activities and campaigns aimed at reducing the risk of heart and circulatory disease, cancer and Type 2 diabetes. These will include:

  • Developing the UK’s leading workplace health programme for Tesco’s 300,000 UK colleagues
  • Aligning communication campaigns in store and online with national health campaigns;
  • Training Tesco pharmacists to help them better support customers in the prevention and management of heart and circulatory disease, cancer and Type 2 diabetes;
  • Sharing anonymised sales information to help develop insight on health policy and public health programmes;
  • Fundraising for more health research – innovative and engaging fundraising initiatives that help customers and colleagues raise money for the three charities.

Carrefour launches The Boucles du Cœur 2018 edition; continues its support to children in need

Carrefour launches The Boucles du Cœur 2018 edition; continues its support to children in need

Boulogne-Billancourt, France, 2017-Dec-28 — /EPR Retail News/ — The Boucles du Cœur – the event created by Carrefour – has just launched a call for charity projects to decide which association is to be the beneficiary, at national level, of the donations given during the 2018 edition. The general public will vote for the best project on the Internet.

The Boucles du Cœur
In 2011, Carrefour created the Boucles du Cœur, a charity event held in the group’s stores for one month every year. The Boucles du Cœur is a means to collect donations and so finance research projects or initiatives designed to help children in difficulty. Every year, one particular national charity and more than 300 local organisations benefit from the generosity of Carrefour’s customers and the commitment of its employees. In 2017, €2.6 million were donated, €375,000 of which went to the Grégory Lemarchal association. Since they were set up, the Boucles du Cœur has raised €8 million.

The call for projects
New for 2018: the charity supported at national level will be chosen by people over the Internet. They will get to vote for one of the 12 finalist charities short-listed by a Carrefour panel. Applicants spearheading a project to help children in difficulty in France should submit their application online by 6 January 2018 at http://www.carrefour.fr/engagements/boucles-du-coeur/inscription

People will then have from 22 January until 18 February to vote on www.carrefour.fr. The winning beneficiary charity will then be revealed on 1 March. The 11 other charities will each get an award of €1000.

Eligibility criteria: The project must have something to do with supporting children and must be originated by a general-interest, non-profit making organisation, or one that is recognised as being in the public interest. It should relate to the day-to-day lives and environments of ill children, preventive healthcare, nutrition, education or protecting children in France. It must be delivered by the charity within 2 years of the 2018 Boucles du Cœur, and it must be possible to identify its impact.

Spotlight on seven years of initiatives to help children in need
The 7 previous editions have supported projects managed by the Laurette Fugain association (in 2016), the Etoile de Martin (in 2015), SOS Children’s Village, ELA (the European Leukodystrophy Association), the Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque (set up to enable children with heart malformations to undergo surgery in France) and the Fêtes le Mur (which fosters community involvement among disadvantaged children). Thanks to the Boucles du Cœur, the Laurette Fugain association, for example, has been able to get its “LEA” project off the ground – a large-scale study designed to further our understanding of post-illness recovery. The Etoile de Martin was able to fund a research project into rare tumours in children. The Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque association brought 30 children suffering from heart malformations to France so they could be operated on – children who could not receive treatment in their home countries. The Grégory Lemarchal association is funding a wide research programme into infections, and is increasing life expectancy for cystic fibrosis sufferers.

The CVS Health Foundation announces a $550,000 commitment to the Alzheimer’s Association

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Dec-18 — /EPR Retail News/ — The CVS Health Foundation today announced a $550,000 commitment to the Alzheimer’s Association, extending its support for a new program to enhance disease diagnosis and assessment with clinicians while also educating them about care and support programs available to help families following a diagnosis. The grant is being shared with six local Alzheimer’s Association chapters and brings the Foundation’s total contribution to more than $1 million since 2016.

“The CVS Health Foundation is proud to support the Alzheimer’s Association in its effort to ensure that patients and caregivers receive the resources they need following an Alzheimer’s diagnosis and are able to maintain a high-quality of life,” said Eileen Howard Boone, president of the CVS Health Foundation. “We’ve seen significant results following the first year of the program and look forward to working with the Alzheimer’s Association to continue to fulfill our program’s mission.”

The new charitable commitment builds upon support from the CVS Health Foundation for a new program established in 2016 to increase diagnosis, disclosure and education for Alzheimer’s disease. The six local chapters that have benefited from this support have all shown significant progress toward their goals of partnering with health care providers to enhance their ability to detect, diagnose, and care for individuals living with the disease and their caregivers, including:

  • Broadened Physician Knowledge Over 7,000 clinicians were educated on prevention, diagnosis, therapeutics and research related to Alzheimer’s disease. The education was conducted both in person and virtually in the form of micro-learnings, CME events, office visits, staff trainings and multimedia campaigns.
  • Increased Patient Referrals for Support Services – The six chapters increased patient referrals to the Alzheimer’s Association’s care and support resources from clinical health care professionals by 61 percent following diagnosis.
  • Expanded Capacity Each local chapter was able to expand their internal capacity through hiring of new staff, increased training for existing staff and better utilizing volunteers. As a result, the chapters were able to reach more clinicians, patients and caregivers affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

Through the additional support of the CVS Health Foundation, the Central and North Florida, Desert Southwest, Greater IllinoisMassachusetts/New HampshireNorthern California/Northern Nevada and Greater Missouri chapters will continue their work to expand health care provider outreach and expand automatic referral process for education and care consultations, with the goal of increasing the number of people in each chapter with access to care.

“The Alzheimer’s Association greatly appreciates CVS Health Foundation’s generous support of the Diagnose, Disclose, and Direct Connect Pilot Grant program,” said Beth Kallmyer, Vice President, Care and Support, Alzheimer’s Association. “The grants have been instrumental in launching innovative programs that are influencing provider behavior in terms of detecting and diagnosing dementia as well as educating physicians about the programs available for individuals and families impacted by this devastating disease.”

The number of people living with Alzheimer’s disease is expected to rise from over 5 million people today to more than 16 million by 2050, and costs are expected to rise as high as $1.1 trillion. Research shows effective health care provider outreach and education are essential for helping people with Alzheimer’s disease achieve their best quality of life.

Each Charity to Receive a $5,000 KidCents Grant to Improve the Lives of Children

Camp Hill, Pa., 2017-Dec-18 — /EPR Retail News/ — This season of giving, in an effort to give back to non-profit organizations that give so much to their clients and communities, The Rite Aid Foundation is awarding a total of $2.2 million to its partner charities through its KidCents Holiday Wishes program. Created to recognize the year-round efforts of each organization, each of the more than 440 charities currently participating in The Rite Aid Foundation’s KidCents program will receive a $5,000 grant to help make a holiday wish of their choice come true.

“The Rite Aid Foundation wanted to give our KidCents charities a special gift this holiday season, in recognition of all they do to give the children they serve a chance for better lives and brighter futures,” said Tracy Henderson, director of The Rite Aid Foundation and charitable giving initiatives. “Our KidCents Holiday Wishes program captures the true spirit of the holiday season and is the perfect way to thank our partner charities for all they do throughout the year to make a difference in the lives of children in our communities.”

The KidCents charities were asked to pick the wish they felt would have the most impact for those they serve. Holiday wishes range from facility and equipment repairs to operating supplies to holiday care packages and gifts to training and special programming to help improve the health, safety and well-being of the children they serve. Examples of holiday wishes being fulfilled through the KidCents Holiday Wishes program include:

• Miracle Babies, San Diego, CA: The nonprofit organization, which provides education, support and financial assistance to families with critically ill newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, is creating holiday care packages that will be distributed to 500 parents.

• The Boys and Girls Club of the Tar River Region, Rocky Mount, NC: The local chapter, which provides after-school programming to thousands of kids ages 5-18 years old at three separate locations, plans to replace insulation that was damaged by Hurricane Matthew last year.

• The Children’s Village, Dobbs Ferry, NY: The nonprofit organization, which provides innovative residential and community-based program to at-risk children, teens and families, is creating a new game room for the 300 kids who live at the facility.

• Northeast Youth Center, Spokane, WA: The youth center, which provides educational and recreational activities to children ages 3-17, will help kids stay warm this winter by providing winter coats and boots.

• Washtenaw Area Council for Children, Ypsilanti, MI: Michigan Children’s Trust Fund’s designated agency for the prevention of child abuse and neglect in Washtenaw County is purchasing 25 tablets and one laptop to begin offering a cyber safety program to its members.

NewYork-Presbyterian’s telemedicine services now available through Walgreens digital properties and at self-service kiosks at Duane Reade drugstores

NEW YORK, N.Y. & DEERFIELD, Ill., 2017-Dec-12 — /EPR Retail News/ — NewYork-Presbyterian and Walgreens are collaborating to bring convenient access to NewYork-Presbyterian’s world-class care through new telemedicine services, now available through Walgreens digital properties and at self-service kiosks at select Duane Reade drugstores in New York.  NewYork-Presbyterian, New York’s No. 1 hospital, is offering the telemedicine services as part of its NYP OnDemand suite of digital health services.

“We are delighted to work with Walgreens to bring NewYork-Presbyterian’s world-class care right to your neighborhood drugstore with this exciting new platform,” said Dr. Steven J. Corwin, president and CEO of NewYork-Presbyterian. “Patients can expect to receive focused, one-on-one care from leading physicians, where and when they need it. We believe telemedicine has a critical role to play in expanding access to high-quality care, and we are proud to be at the forefront of digital healthcare delivery.”

The first NewYork-Presbyterian NYP OnDemand kiosk is currently available at the Duane Reade location at 40 Wall Street in Manhattan, with additional locations expected to open in 2018. These kiosks, located in private, secure rooms inside the stores, offer instant examination, diagnosis and treatment of non-life threatening illnesses and injuries through NYP OnDemand Urgent Care. With the touch of a button, patients can reach board-certified Weill Cornell Medicine emergency medicine physicians, who provide exams through a high-definition video-conference connection. At the end of the examination, if the physician writes a prescription, it can be instantly sent to the patient’s preferred pharmacy. Pediatric emergency medicine physicians will also be available to provide care during more limited hours. Physicians from ColumbiaDoctors are expected to participate in early 2018.

“These kiosks provide real-time care for our patients, enabling them to consult Weill Cornell Medicine physicians privately through the convenience of their local drugstores,” said Dr. Augustine M.K. Choi, the Stephen and Suzanne Weiss Dean of Weill Cornell Medicine. “We are proud to work with NewYork-Presbyterian and Walgreens to extend the reach of our doctors beyond their offices, making healthcare accessible to patients across the city.”

“This technology gives us another way to bring Columbia physicians to the neighborhoods where our patients live and work,” said Dr. Lee Goldman, dean of the Faculties of Health Sciences and Medicine and chief executive of Columbia University Irving Medical Center. “Improving access to doctors is a fundamental way to improve our patients’ health and well-being.”

In addition to the in-store kiosks, Walgreens customers in the New York area using the Walgreens website can access NYP OnDemand Urgent Care to video chat with board-certified emergency medicine doctors.

“We believe that telemedicine can play a critical role in connecting patients with providers,” said Greg Orr, divisional vice president of digital health for Walgreens. “We can now help to bring awareness of services that are offered locally by trusted providers such as NewYork-Presbyterian. We are pleased that NewYork-Presbyterian will be the first local healthcare provider to collaborate with us on our evolving telehealth and digital strategy.”

The kiosk experience is further enhanced with medical devices to provide key information to the physician during the virtual visit. These include a forehead thermometer that measures temperature with a gentle swipe of the forehead, a blood pressure cuff to measure blood pressure and a pulse oximeter that measures the amount of oxygen in the body. A dermascope, which allows the provider to see a high-resolution view of skin conditions, is also available.

“We’ve had much success over the years working with NewYork-Presbyterian at our on-site Walgreens pharmacy,” said Dr. Pat Carroll, chief medical officer for Walgreens Healthcare Clinics. “We value this innovative collaboration and look forward to finding new and different ways to work together to enhance patient care.”

Visit times are expected to take about 10 to 20 minutes but will vary depending on the patient’s individual needs. The urgent care service is designed to care for non-life threatening conditions, illnesses and injuries such as: sore throat, allergies, rash, pink eye, abdominal pain, asthma, cold or the flu, dizziness, fever, and sprains. For a full list of conditions, please refer to: www.nyp.org/ondemand/urgent-care.

The kiosk hours at 40 Wall Street are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Pediatric emergency medicine physicians can be reached from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays.

The video visits are part of NewYork-Presbyterian’s award-winning digital health suite of services, NYP OnDemand. Launched in 2016, NYP OnDemand, in collaboration with Weill Cornell Medicine and ColumbiaDoctors, is designed to improve access to NewYork-Presbyterian’s world-class care, allowing patients to easily communicate with physicians from a mobile phone, tablet or computer – and now through these kiosks at select Duane Reade locations. Schnucks encourages customers to get a flu shot by offering a $10 Schnucks Gift Card

ST. LOUIS, 2017-Dec-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — In observance of National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW), Schnucks is offering a $10 Schnucks Gift Card to all patients who get a flu shot at any of the 95 Schnucks Pharmacies between Dec. 6 and Dec. 12, 2017.

“Schnucks Pharmacies make it easy for patients to get vaccinated,” said Senior Director of Pharmacy Operations Bob Buganski. “No appointment is necessary, no prescription is required, and our pharmacists are certified immunizers. Patients can simply stop by during regular hours and request a flu shot.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) established NIVW as a reminder of the importance of an annual flu shot. According to the CDC, every year an average of five to 20 percent of the United States population gets the flu, 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications, and 36,000 people die from flu related causes. Elderly individuals, young children and those with certain health conditions are at a higher risk for serious flu complications. The agency recommends that everyone six months of age and older get a flu shot.

The cost of the vaccine at Schnucks Pharmacies is $41.99, however, there is no charge for Medicare Part B patients and most insurance plans cover the vaccine, so those patients are only responsible for their plan co-pay, if applicable.

In addition to the Flu vaccine, Schnucks Pharmacies also offer several other immunizations. For more information, please visit the Schnucks Pharmacy Immunization Page.

Rite Aid to Host Flu Facebook Live Event with certified immunizing pharmacist Chris Altman and Dr. Jennifer Caudle on Wednesday, Dec. 6

Rite Aid Certified Immunizing Pharmacist Chris Altman and Dr. Caudle to Host Flu Facebook Live Event on Wednesday, Dec. 6

Camp Hill, Pa., 2017-Dec-06 — /EPR Retail News/ — In an effort to encourage people to get a flu shot to protect themselves from the flu this holiday season, Rite Aid is teaming up with Dr. Jennifer Caudle, a nationally renowned health expert and practicing family physician, during National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW). Created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2005, NIVW is a national observance that was established to highlight the importance of continuing influenza vaccination, as well as fostering greater use of flu vaccine after the holiday season into January. Last week, the CDC reported that flu season is off to an early start and could peak over the holidays if flu activity continues to increase at its current weekly pace.

Dr. Caudle and Rite Aid certified immunizing pharmacist Chris Altman will host a special flu-focused Facebook Live event on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 8 p.m. ET to answer questions about the flu, address common misconceptions and provide helpful tips on how to stay healthy throughout flu season. To learn more about the event and set a reminder, visit www.facebook.com/riteaid.

“Vaccination is the single best way to protect yourself against the flu,” says Dr. Caudle. “Rite Aid pharmacists undergo special training and are professionally certified to administer immunizations and with thousands of locations across the country, Rite Aid pharmacies are a convenient and professional setting for flu shots. That’s why I’m partnering with Rite Aid and reminding people to get vaccinated as soon as possible.”

As one of the most accessible healthcare providers, Rite Aid’s 11,000 certified immunizing pharmacists are a valuable resource in helping people fight the flu, which the CDC estimates will infect one in five Americans this year. Rite Aid pharmacists are specially trained in immunizations and are able to make vaccine recommendations based on an individuals’ specific health needs.

“Our pharmacists are on the frontlines of healthcare in the communities they serve, and when it comes to fighting the flu, as certified immunizers, they can be a patient’s first line of defense,” says Jocelyn Konrad, Rite Aid executive vice president of pharmacy. “And because flu activity typically peaks between December and March according to the CDC, National Influenza Vaccination Week is the perfect time to remind people there’s still time to get vaccinated and protect themselves as well as their family this flu season.”

The CDC recommends that most healthy Americans, six months or older, including pregnant women, get vaccinated. Since it takes about two weeks from the date of your shot for your body to develop its full defense against the flu, waiting until there is an outbreak may be too late.

Seasonal flu shots are available at Rite Aid locations across the country. This year Rite Aid is offering three types of flu vaccines: a quadrivalent flu vaccine, which offers protection against four strains of the flu, the standard trivalent vaccine, and FLUAD, a trivalent vaccine with adjuvant, an ingredient that helps create a stronger immune response to vaccination, which is approved for people 65 and older.

Flu shots are covered by most insurance plans, including Medicare Part B and are available during pharmacy hours; no appointment is necessary. To locate the nearest Rite Aid pharmacy, visit www.riteaid.com or call 1-800-RITE-AID.

Rite Aid Corporation (NYSE: RAD) is one of the nation’s leading drugstore chains fiscal 2017 annual revenues of $32.8 billion. Information about Rite Aid, including corporate background and press releases, is available through the company’s website at www.riteaid.com.

At the telepharmacy, a prescription is processed similarly to how it would be at a Hy-Vee retail pharmacy. A pharmacist at the Fort Dodge Hy-Vee will verify the prescription for accuracy, as well as review the prescription for appropriateness in dosing and safety. Once the pharmacist completes an initial verification, a certified technician fills the prescription. The pharmacist then provides an additional verification by checking the accuracy of the filling process via digital equipment. Pharmacists are able to counsel the patient via iPad and telephone to answer any questions.

Williams said the new telepharmacy provides patients “with a direct line of communication to a pharmacist without having to leave their community.” In addition, the telepharmacy expands the selection of current over-the-counter product offerings

Walgreens launches new multifaceted brand positioning and identity

Multifaceted campaign highlights the importance of care, trust and accessibility to Walgreens customers

DEERFIELD, Ill., 2017-Dec-06 — /EPR Retail News/ —Walgreens and its customers have certainly changed since the first Walgreens drugstore opened in 1901, but one constant over that time is Walgreens legacy of care. That’s the foundation of a new, multifaceted brand positioning and identity that launched Sunday and is reflected in the new tagline, Walgreens. Trusted since 1901.

The brand positioning is an effort to emphasize the aspects of Walgreens from the past 116 years that customers truly love. Those attributes – care, trust and accessibility – are the focus of the campaign, which includes new advertising and marketing, and a purpose to champion the health and well-being of every community in America.

“We went deep into Walgreens history to rediscover what makes Walgreens great,” said Alex Gourlay, co-chief operating officer for Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc. and president of Walgreens. “It was clear from our research that three strong characteristics define our relationship with our customers, rooted firmly in our history since 1901: care, trust and accessibility. We’ve always cared for our customers’ health and well-being, but how we’ve cared has evolved over time. As consumer behavior continues to change, we will focus on these core attributes to help define the work we do.”

Over the past three years, Walgreens has redefined its commercial offering at every touch point across pharmacy, retail, health care services and consumer services, and the brand campaign signals the start of the next phase of its transformation. Walgreens continues to introduce programs and services addressing customers’ needs through a lens of care, trust and accessibility. Some of the more recent examples include high-touch care provided through Walgreens specialized pharmacies focused on disease states such as oncology, hepatitis and HIV; the addition of trained beauty consultants at approximately 3,000 stores; convenient access to FedEx package pickup and drop-off services at 7,500 stores; the simplification of the product assortment in approximately 1,500 stores to make shopping easier and more.

“Trusted since 1901 reinforces the fundamental truth of the work we do: that behind every prescription and purchase is a person, and behind every person is a unique story,” said Adam Holyk, Walgreens senior vice president and chief marketing officer. “Since the beginning of our company, we have dedicated ourselves to serving the people of our communities, supporting them through their ups and downs, whenever they need us. Straightforward, authentic, warm and reliable, we’re here to help everyone – every day. Beyond a new tagline, we hope to reflect where our brand is headed in the future with new initiatives and services that align to our brand promise: to always to be here to help you feel good.”

Also beginning today, the company is releasing a series of digital vignettes called “Care Stories,” which feature real employees and Walgreens customers. The videos are a snapshot of how Walgreens continues to provide care to its patients.

Tesco expands its vegetarian and vegan food offering this Christmas

Tesco expands its vegetarian and vegan food offering this Christmas

Welwyn Garden City, UK, 2017-Dec-05 — /EPR Retail News/ — Changing UK diets have prompted Tesco to double its vegetarian and vegan centrepiece festive food offering this year.

And that should be good news for the growing number of people who don’t eat or want to cut down on meat or dairy foods. It also shows customers that however they do Christmas – everyone’s welcome at Tesco.

In the last year demand for vegetarian and vegan food has soared and Tesco is seeing the effect of lifestyle choices like Meat Free Mondays and flexitarian diets with sales of chilled vegetarian ready meals and meat substitutes growing by 25 per cent.

For vegetarians there’s a Portobello Mushroom Wellington made with spinach and bursts of cranberry in rich puff pastry and also a Festive Nut Roast with a mulled wine and cranberry glaze.

And for the first time ever Tesco has two vegan Christmas dinner centrepieces – a sumptuous Turmeric Spiced Cauliflower Wellington and a festive Pecan and Peanut Roast with maple-roasted carrot and parsnip.

Tesco recently announced that chef Derek Sarno would be joining the retailer as director of plant-based innovation, with a focus on helping customers enjoy more plant-based food by putting it centre stage like never before.

Derek is now working with suppliers, farmers and chefs on developing exciting new foods that go on sale over the coming year.

Chef Derek Sarno said:

“These are changing times and vegetable dishes have now become centrepiece heroes in their own right on dinner tables up and down the country.

“We think that our Portobello Mushroom Wellington is so delicious that it may tempt diners to try something different this Christmas.

“This year, Tesco’s Christmas campaign celebrates the many ways we come together at Christmas, and with the quality of vegetarian and vegan food now so good there may even be squabbles across the dinner table over who gets what.”

Tesco has been catering for the increasing amount of vegan customers throughout the year and is offering its biggest ever range of vegan products.

It recently increased its range of dairy free cheeses to nine and among the new additions are a melty red Leicester for cheese on toast, Mozzarella to top pizzas, a jalapeno Cheddar, a blue cheese, and Cheddar.

It has also launched eight new milk free desserts to cater for vegans.

According to a British Social Attitudes report published last year, three in 10 people in Britain (29 per cent) say they have reduced the amount of meat they eat in the past 12 months.

And nearly half (44 per cent) of people either do not eat meat, have reduced the amount of meat they eat or are considering reducing the amount of meat they eat.

Lynne Elliot, Chief Executive, the Vegetarian Society commented:

“With demand for vegetarian and meat-free alternatives rising, it’s great to see supermarkets across the UK like Tesco working hard to keep their customers happy and increasing their vegetarian range.

“Offering customers a better choice is especially welcome at Christmas.”

As part of Tesco’s commitment to increase the amount of vegetables in people’s diets and encourage healthier eating, it has recently pledged to increase the amount of vegetables used in recipes and also offer more vegetable options amongst its ready meal deals.

Notes to editors:

  • Tesco signed up to The Food Foundation’s Peas Please pledge, focused on making it easier for more people to eat more vegetables, in October. More here.

We are a team of over 450,000 colleagues dedicated to serving shoppers a little better every day.

CVS Health to acquire Aetna for $77 billion

  • Combines CVS Health’s Unmatched Local Presence and Clinical Capabilities with Aetna’s Leading Health Care Benefits and Services
  • Provides Greater Integration of Care, Empowering Consumers and their Health Professionals to Make More Informed Decisions
  • Transaction Expected to Generate Significant Synergies for Shareholders and Benefits for Customers

WOONSOCKET, R.I. and HARTFORD, Conn., 2017-Dec-04 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), a company at the forefront of changing the health care landscape, and Aetna (NYSE: AET), one of the nation’s leading diversified health care benefits companies, today (December 3, 2017) announced the execution of a definitive merger agreement under which CVS Health will acquire all outstanding shares of Aetna for a combination of cash and stock. Under the terms of the merger agreement, which has been unanimously approved today by the boards of directors of each company, Aetna shareholders will receive $145.00 per share in cash and 0.8378 CVS Health shares for each Aetna share. The transaction values Aetna at approximately $207 per share or approximately $69 billion1. Including the assumption of Aetna’s debt, the total value of the transaction is $77 billion.

This transaction fills an unmet need in the current health care system and presents a unique opportunity to redefine access to high-quality care in lower cost, local settings whether in the community, at home, or through digital tools.

CVS Health President and Chief Executive Officer Larry J. Merlo said, “This combination brings together the expertise of two great companies to remake the consumer health care experience. With the analytics of Aetna and CVS Health’s human touch, we will create a health care platform built around individuals. We look forward to working with the talented people at Aetna to position the combined company as America’s front door to quality health care, integrating more closely the work of doctors, pharmacists, other health care professionals and health benefits companies to create a platform that is easier to use and less expensive for consumers.”

This is a natural evolution for both companies as they seek to put the consumer at the center of health care delivery. CVS Health has steadily become an integrated health care company, and Aetna has moved beyond being a traditional insurer to focus more on consumer well-being.

“This is the next step in our journey, positioning the combined company to dramatically further empower consumers. Together with CVS Health, we will better understand our members’ health goals, guide them through the health care system and help them achieve their best health,” said Mark T. Bertolini, Aetna chairman and CEO. “Aetna has a proud tradition of continually innovating to address unmet consumer needs and providing leading products and services to the marketplace.”

Bertolini continued, “Aetna has a talented and dedicated group of employees working to build a healthier world every day. Our combined company will be more competitive in the marketplace and accelerate progress toward achieving this mission.”

Today, increasing numbers of consumers are taking on more and more responsibility for paying for their health care as the burden of costs is being shifted to them. Together, CVS Health and Aetna will be a trusted community partner who will help consumers better manage the cost of the health care they need. The combined company will also be well positioned to more effectively meet the health needs of many more people, especially the 50 percent of Americans with chronic conditions that account for more than 80 percent of all health care costs. Finally, capabilities developed following this transaction will directly benefit clients of both companies and enable them to better manage their health care costs.

BENEFITS FOR CONSUMERS

Uniquely Integrated, Community-Based Health Care Experience

Consumers will benefit from a uniquely integrated, community-based health care experience. The combined company will also be able to better understand patients’ health goals, guide them through the health care system, and help them achieve their best health. There will be expanded opportunities to bring health care services to consumers every day. CVS Pharmacy locations will include space for wellness, clinical and pharmacy services, vision, hearing, nutrition, beauty, and medical equipment, in addition to the products and services our customers currently enjoy. An entirely new health services offering available in many locations will function as a community-based health hub dedicated to connecting the pathways needed to improve health and answering patients’ questions about their health conditions, as well as prescription drugs and health coverage.

This personalized health care experience will be delivered by connecting Aetna’s extensive network of providers with greater consumer access through CVS Health. This includes more than 9,700 CVS Pharmacy locations and 1,100 MinuteClinic walk-in clinics as well as further extensions into the community through Omnicare’s senior pharmacy solutions, Coram’s infusion services, and the more than 4,000 CVS Health nursing professionals providing in-clinic and home-based care across the nation. As a result, there will be a better opportunity to utilize local care solutions in a more integrated fashion with the goal of improving patient outcomes.

More Integrated Data and Analytics

The entire health care system will also benefit from broader use of data and analytics, leading to improved patient health at substantially lower cost. This will be achieved, for example, by helping patients avoid unnecessary hospital read missions. Twenty percent of Medicare patients are readmitted to the hospital soon after being discharged at significant annual costs, much of which is avoidable. Readmission rates can be cut in half if patients have a complete review of their medications after discharge from the hospital to help them manage their care at home. In addition, home devices to monitor activity levels, pulse, and respiratory rates can be used to prevent read missions. Rather than feeling lost and confused, selected high risk patients discharged from the hospital, or their caregivers, will be able to stop at a health hub location to access services such as medication evaluations, home monitoring and use of durable medical equipment, as needed. All of these services will complement and be integrated with the care provided by their physician and medical team.

Opportunity to Better Fight Chronic Disease

The combined entity will be able to help address the growing cost of treating chronic diseases in important ways. For example, there are 30 million Americans suffering from diabetes, costing the health care system approximately $245 billion annually. Patients with diabetes will receive care in between doctor visits through face-to-face counseling at a store-based health hub and remote monitoring of key indicators such as blood glucose levels. When needed, patients can receive text messages to let them know when their glucose levels deviate from normal ranges. As a follow up, patients can receive counseling on medication adherence, pick up diabetes-related supplies and engage ancillary services such as counsel on weight loss and programs designed to reverse diabetes through nutrition. This will result in better control of their blood sugar levels and better health, which should be appreciated by both patients and their doctors.

“These types of interventions are things that the traditional health care system could be doing,” commented Merlo, “but the traditional health care system lacks the key elements of convenience and coordination that help to engage consumers in their health. That’s what the combination of CVS Health and Aetna will deliver.”

BENEFITS FOR SHAREHOLDERS

As a result of this transaction, shareholders are expected to benefit from a number of outcomes, including enhanced competitive positioning; low- to mid-single digit accretion in the second full year after the close of the transaction, including the ability to deliver $750 million in near-term synergies; and a platform from which to accelerate growth. The combination over the longer term has the potential to deliver significant incremental value as it will spur the development of new products and generate significant new growth opportunities as a uniquely integrated retailer, pharmacy benefits manager and health plan. Aetna shareholders will receive attractive value from the transaction, including $145 per share in cash, and the ability to participate in the future success and high growth potential of the combined company.

TRANSACTION DETAILS

Transaction Terms

Under the terms of the merger agreement, each outstanding share of Aetna common stock will be exchanged for $145.00 in cash and 0.8378 shares of CVS Health common stock. Upon closing of the transaction, Aetna shareholders will own approximately 22% of the combined company and CVS Health shareholders will own approximately 78%.

The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2018. It is subject to approval by CVS Health and Aetna shareholders, regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.

Financing of the Transaction

CVS Health intends to fund the cash portion of the transaction through a combination of existing cash on hand and debt financing. The transaction is not contingent upon receipt of financing. Barclays, Goldman Sachs and Bank of America Merrill Lynch are providing $49 billion of financing commitments.

Governance Details

Upon the closing of the transaction, three of Aetna’s directors, including Aetna’s Chairman and CEO Mark T. Bertolini, will be added to the CVS Health Board of Directors. In addition, members of the Aetna management team will play significant roles in the newly combined company. Aetna will operate as a stand-alone business unit within the CVS Health enterprise and will be led by members of their current management team.

Advisors

Barclays and Goldman Sachs are serving as financial advisors to CVS Health, and Centerview Partners also provided financial advice to the CVS Health Board of Directors. The company was advised on legal matters by Shearman & Sterling LLP, Dechert LLP, and McDermott Will & Emery LLP. Lazard and Allen & Company LLC are serving as financial advisors to Aetna and Evercore is serving as financial advisor to Aetna’s Board of Directors. Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP is acting as Aetna’s legal advisor.

National Influenza Vaccination Week: CVS Health encourages families to get their flu shots in preparation for peak flu season

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Dec-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) is encouraging families to get their flu shots during National Influenza Vaccination Week (Dec. 3-9) in preparation for peak flu season. A recent survey released by CVS Health found that nearly two-thirds (61 percent) of Americans get a flu vaccine every year, or plan to get one this year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) established National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) in 2005 to remind people to get vaccinated through the busy holiday season and into the new year, when cases of the flu typically increase.

According to the CDC, only about 40 percent of the U.S. population reported having been vaccinated by the end of November last year. “National Influenza Vaccination Week is a great reminder to make time during the busy holiday season to get your annual flu shot,” said Papatya Tankut, Vice President of Pharmacy Affairs at CVS Health. “With many people gathering for the holidays and flu activity beginning to increase, getting vaccinated will help ensure a healthier holiday for you and your loved ones.”

The flu vaccine is the most effective way to prevent the flu and is considered a preventive service under the Affordable Care Act. The vaccine is fully covered and available at no cost through most insurance plans. With more than 9,700 CVS Pharmacy stores and 1,100 walk-in MinuteClinic locations accepting most insurance plans, CVS Health has made vaccinations quick, easy and accessible for patients.

This year’s flu survey sheds light on the increasing number of factors families consider when deciding where, when, and how to get vaccinated. Among those who have ever received a flu vaccine, the top considerations on where to receive the vaccine include convenience (37%), doctor recommendations (36%) and where insurance is accepted (35%).

The survey also revealed that nearly two in three (65 percent) employed Americans would still go to work even if they were feeling ill with flu-like symptoms.

“The influenza virus is highly contagious and can be easily spread through a workplace environment through direct contact with co-workers or infected surfaces,” said Angela Patterson, Chief Nurse Practitioner Officer at MinuteClinic. “Influenza infection can have potentially serious effects and getting vaccinated is vital to staying healthy, especially when working alongside co-workers who may have already contracted the virus.”

Getting the flu shot protects you and those around you who may be more vulnerable to serious flu illness, like babies and young children, older people, and people with certain chronic health conditions. With seasonal flu outbreaks beginning as early as October and lasting as late as May, it is not too late to get a flu shot as it is the best defense against getting the flu.

Flu shots are available seven days a week, with no appointment necessary at CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic locations nationwide, including locations inside select Target stores.1 Consumers can easily find the store closest to them using CVS.com or the CVS Pharmacy app, and for those patients planning to go to MinuteClinic for their flu shot, location information and current wait times can be found on the CVS Pharmacy app or MinuteClinic.com.

In addition, customers will receive a $5 off $25 coupon when they get a flu shot at CVS Pharmacy or MinuteClinic. Patients who receive a flu shot at CVS Pharmacy or MinuteClinic locations inside select Target stores will receive a $5 Target coupon.2
