Asda announces a cheesy twist on an Easter classic with the launch of NEW Cheester Egg

LEEDS, UK, 2018-Feb-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — It’s the eternal question that continues to grip the nation – chocolate or cheese? With recent stats revealing 60%* of Brits would choose the sandwich staple over the sweet-shop favourite, Asda has hatched a plan to make this Easter the cheesiest Britain has ever seen.

A NEW Cheester Egg – that’s right, Cheester Egg – will be available for customers to take home from Asda stores from 16th March. The half egg-shaped cheese, half condiment product will offer the entire cheeseboard egg-sperience, with crumbly mini oatcake crackers and a sachet of sweet and sticky caremelised onion chutney all included – sweet dreams really are made of cheese!

This cheesy twist on an Easter classic has been crafted using Blacksticks Blue Cheese and is made using freshly sourced milk and traditional Farmhouse Dairy methods to create a delicious (top secret) Blacksticks recipe.

Ever versatile, the soft and crumbly blue cheese can be the centerpiece of a cheeseboard, deliciously spread onto hot cross buns for egg-sperimental sweet and savoury lovers, or fit perfectly into an Easter Egg hunt for real cheese lovers.

The Cheester Egg is the latest addition to Asda’s Easter offering, complete with traditional favourites to satisfy all Easter cravings.

James Clapham, commercial manager of Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses, says: “We’re a nation of cheese fanatics, so we know consumers will love the Cheester Egg. It’s an un-expected yet delicious twist on a traditional Easter favourite, and we can’t wait for Asda customers to enjoy our handmade quality blue cheese”.

Jo Miller, Asda’s head of cheese comments: “We’re so excited to launch the Cheester Egg. Following the incredible response to our Christmas cheese advent calendar, the Cheester Egg was the obvious next step to show our customers that we’re constantly listening and ensuring there’s something for everyone at Asda this Easter.”

The NEW Blacksticks Blue Cheester Egg is available in Asda stores from 16th March. Please see http://butlerscheeses.co.uk/for further details and use @asda @ButlersCheese #BlacksticksBlue when posting on social.

George at Asda launches a brand new collection of unicorn inspired products for older audiences

  • George at Asda have launched a brand new unicorn range after seeing rise in demand from older audiences
  • The George website saw 79,000 unicorn searches in December 2017 with another 12,700 searches in the first week of January 2018

LEEDS, UK, 2018-Feb-21 — /EPR Retail News/ — After seeing huge demand from older audiences and nearly 80,000 searches for the mythical creature in December, George at Asda has launched a brand new collection of unicorn inspired products, geared towards nostalgic adults.

Whilst the unicorn is still very much the focal point, stars, clouds and rainbows in addition to metallic and iridescent finishes expand the theme for this collection, making the range incredibly Instagram-worthy.

The range features everything from dinnerware, cushions, crockery and glassware, bathroom accessories and even ornaments. With an air of whimsical chic, the range is perfect for the trend orientated Millennials whose demand inspired the range.

The collection falls under ‘Cosmic Retro’, one of the six core trends for 2018 as highlighted by George Homeware Designer and Interiors Guru, Natalie Ratcliffe.

Natalie said: “This is the third unicorn range for George and we fully expect this one to be as successful, if not more so, than the previous.

“The difference in this range is that we’ve responded to the overwhelming demand for a more ‘grown-up’ selection of products, and given the customers exactly what they want – the unicorn has officially graduated, in terms of style, for 2018.

“We knew nostalgia would be a key player this year as part of Cosmic Retro but the unicorn as a standalone micro trend is still going from strength to strength, so for all those unicorn fans out there, you’ve got a lot to look forward to.”

Cosmic Retro Trend

Cosmic Retro is the unicorn of 2018 with its juxtaposition of space age and retro, think disco balls, iridescent metals, astrology and sequins, this trend provides new nostalgia. With space tourism something we could see in this lifetime and advances in tech, our interest in space, the galaxy and the stars has been renewed and this trend fully embodies a dreamlike wonderment.

The colour scheme is taken straight from the skies with black, the entire spectrum of purple and silver being the palette for the entire trend. Coloured marble, crystals, iridescent acrylic and high shine metallic metals are prominent whilst prints are inspired by horoscopes, the constellations and astronauts.

For 90s kids, it’s a revival of their childhood, for Generation Z it’s the newest in a line of social media friendly interiors, sure to be a hit on Instagram.

The new range is on-sale at Asda stores and online at www.george.com

UK: Asda, FareShare and The Trussell Trust team up to help one million people out of food poverty

UK: Asda, FareShare and The Trussell Trust team up to help one million people out of food poverty

Leeds, UK, 2018-Feb-09 — /EPR Retail News/ — Asda and food redistribution charities FareShare and The Trussell Trust have today announced that they will be working together on a new partnership designed to help one million people out of food poverty over the next three years.

The programme will be funded by Asda, and see the supermarket invest at least £20 million in developing the infrastructure of FareShare, which operate a distribution network for food donations and The Trussell Trust, who are the UK’s biggest operator of foodbanks.

Asda’s investment will allow the two charities to develop their infrastructure and offer better services to those in need. Currently, both charities struggle to transport and store fresh food, which needs to be chilled, and means those using food banks are reliant on mainly tinned and packet foods. The investment will also fund support services in food banks, such as debt counselling and job advice, allowing people to begin to get themselves out of food poverty.

Asda has also committed to making sure all of its shops are able to donate surplus food to food banks by 2020.

The partnership will enable FareShare and The Trussell Trust to provide an additional 24 million meals every year, give 500,000 more people access to fresh food in the UK and help one million people get themselves out of food poverty over the next three years.

In a blog post published this morning, Andy Murray, Asda’s Chief Customer Officer, said: “Right now, in the UK 8.4 million people are struggling to afford to eat. One in 10 people in the UK are missing meals to pay their bills – and one in four of those are children. And yet, four million tonnes of perfectly decent food is wasted each year in the UK. We simply cannot – and will not – accept food being wasted whilst people in our communities go hungry. We’ve listened to our customers and want to take on their challenge to fight hunger and create change.”

Lindsay Boswell, Chief Executive of FareShare UK, said: “Based on my 25 years of senior experience in the Voluntary Sector, I believe that Asda’s investment in tackling hunger and food waste in support of front line charities has the potential to create such a multiplier effect that it could well be the largest single act of support since the creation of the National Lottery or the introduction of Gift Aid.”

Sam Stapley, Head of Operations for The Trussell Trust England, said: “The scale and nature of this funding is unprecedented. Asda’s investment means they can expand their reach and develop new projects bringing very real, tangible benefits to local communities and to anyone struggling with food insecurity in a way that simply has not been possible before.”

Asda sets out plans on how it will reduce its use of plastic

Asda sets out plans on how it will reduce its use of plastic

Leeds, UK, 2018-Feb-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — Today (February 5, 2018), Asda has become the first of the “big four” supermarkets to set out detailed plans about how it will reduce its use of plastic.

The supermarket, which accounts for 15.3% of the supermarket industry in the UK has also said it wants to create a more collaborative, open environment within the retail industry to help drive innovation and “unwrap” the plastics problem.

In a document published on its website today, “Plastic Unwrapped – our pledge to use less and recycle more”, Asda has promised its customers that it will reduce the amount of plastic in its packaging by 10% this year, as well as work with its suppliers and other experts to investigate new options to replace plastic packaging and find more recyclable solutions.

What has Asda committed to doing?

  • Removing 10% of plastic from its Own Brand packaging in the next 12 months and publishing regular updates for customers to follow its progress
  • Introducing a zero profit re-usable coffee cup to give customers a great value alternative to single use cups.
  • Remove all single use cups and plastic cutlery from its offices in 2018 and all its stores and cafes by the end of 2019.
  • Phase out 5p ‘single use’ carrier bags from its shops by the end of 2018 and introduce a donation to good causes from the sale of its “bags for life” so that charities don’t lose out.
  • Work in partnership with the UK’s leading experts in packaging technology at the Leeds Beckett University Retail Institute as well as one of Asda’s biggest UK suppliers, ABP, on priority projects to develop new alternatives to plastics and more recyclable materials.
  • Creating the Asda Plastic Ideas Hub, open to all from industry to individuals, offering a £10,000 award for every scaleable, workable idea that helps Asda to tackle its top plastic challenges – such as alternatives to plastic film.

Asda’s President and Chief Executive, Roger Burnley, outlined his commitment to reducing plastic in a blog published alongside the “Plastic Unwrapped” report.

In it he says; “I truly believe that when you serve 18 million people each week and have the ability to make a difference to them, you should do it.

“I want Asda’s customers to know that they can trust us to take the lead on the issues that really matter to them. So we have challenged ourselves to look at what more we can do to reduce the amount of plastic in our business, and within our industry as a whole.”

Stephen Clinton, Store Manager at Asda Trafford Park, said: “We’re delighted to be the first store in the UK to trial the Parcel Tower for our customers. We have seen a fantastic response to the quick service in the past few days and we hope it continues.”

Asda introduces the ultimate showstopping dessert — the NEW Foot-Long Chocolate Éclair

Leeds, UK, 2017-Nov-28 — /EPR Retail News/ — The colossal choux pastry creation lands just in time for Christmas. Inspired by an emerging trend spotted in the crème de la crème of Parisian patisseries. The decadent dessert is the ultimate showstopping centrepiece for only £5.

Christmas just got choux-persized with Asda’s NEW Foot-Long Chocolate Éclair – the ultimate showstopping dessert to impress your guests this festive season.

The mammoth masterpiece is made with deliciously light choux pastry, filled with fluffy Belgian chocolate mousse and sticky caramel sauce and topped with a chocolate fondant. For the finishing touch of festive magic, it’s then drizzled with even more delectable caramel and dusted with gold.
The decadent delight is the brainchild of Asda’s bakery team, born during a recent innovation trip to Paris. Whilst chomping their way through the crème de la crème of Parisian patisseries, they uncovered an emerging trend for oversized sharing desserts. Reminiscent of pastries from the beautiful boulangeries of the Champs-Elysees, a delicate French favourite has been transformed into a celebration-sized Christmas centrepiece for the whole family to enjoy.

Building on the mania of a French meringue favourite, Asda has also launched a giant Marie Antoinette inspired Macaron cake. The pretty in pink frozen gateau is stuffed with a white chocolate mousse, topped with raspberries and a light sprinkling of pistachios for a delicious finish. Perfect for sharing, the supersized creation combines artisanal quality and instant wow-factor for a showstopper that is sure to take centre-stage this Christmas.

Claire Reed, product development manager for chilled bakery, said: “Straight from the streets of Paris to Asda shelves, traditional French favourites can now be enjoyed by the whole family this Christmas. Our experts have lovingly hand finished our striking new desserts, adding the final touch of affordable luxury to your seasonal soirée – sure to leave your loved ones saying Oh La La!”.

Asda introduces NEW Extra Special Triple Lamb Crown

Asda introduces NEW Extra Special Triple Lamb Crown

Leeds, UK, 2017-Nov-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — Fare-thee-well to mediocre cuts of meat this Christmas and welcome the mother of all show-stopping festive centrepieces, Asda’s NEW Extra Special Triple Lamb Crown. The medieval meat masterpiece is inspired by the opulent feasting banquets seen on popular TV series Game of Thrones and inspired by the trend for ‘tear and share’ style dining.

The lavish creation consists of three Welsh-sourced lamb racks that form the structure of a Christmas crown, filled with festive fruit stuffing, drizzled with a pork and mint jus and decorated with botanical rosemary sprigs for the final flourish. The sumptuous showstopper is best devoured alongside golden roast potatoes, parsnips and paired with a goblet of robust red wine.

An Asda spokesperson, said: “The fictional banquet halls of Game of Thrones and times gone by are set to inspire festive feasting this Christmas and impressive joints of meat will take centre stage. Our Triple Lamb Crown is a striking showstopper that will be sure to knock the socks off your loved ones and add a whole new level of luxury and indulgence to your Christmas banquet.”

The mouth-watering creation is the brainchild of the winner of the 2017 Golden Apron competition, 18-year-old Zacharias Abbot from York. The competition seeks to find

Yorkshire’s best young chef and the win gave Zacharias the opportunity to design a range of Christmas products for Asda, and so the Triple Lamb Crown was born.

Asda’s Extra Special Triple Lamb Crown with festive Fruit Stuffing & Port & Mint Jus is available from XXX November nationwide with an RRP of £XXX.

Asda introduces new snore shattering Pineapple Plant to its range

Asda introduces new snore shattering Pineapple Plant to its range

Leeds, UK,2017-Nov-15 — /EPR Retail News/ — Pineapple Plants are said to have snore-reducing qualities thanks to their night-time oxygen production. Exclusive to Asda, the plant could be a stylish snoring solution, according to NASA. Ideal gift for a snore-free Christmas.

There’s nothing more annoying than falling into a deep sleep, only to be woken by the sound of a chainsaw reverberating from your partner’s side of the bed. So, for the 45%* of Brits who suffer with snoring, Asda has introduced a new snore shattering Pineapple Plant to its range, said to reduce those midnight motors and help snorers – and their partners – get a better night’s sleep.

As we enter the Christmas season – which for many involves numerous parties and events – snoring will become an even bigger drain on sleep, making the plant the perfect Christmas gift for any party goers out there.

According to NASA studies, Pineapple Plants produce oxygen and improve air quality throughout the night and therefore, aid better (and quieter) sleep. With almost a quarter of Brits regularly sleeping in different rooms due to their partner’s snoring, this could be the bedroom revolution British couples have been waiting for to get them out of prickly night-time situations.

Grown in Holland, the plants take between 21 and 24 months to develop to produce the inedible, miniature pineapple that adorns the top.
Phil Smith, Asda Plant Buyer, comments: “Snorts, snuffles and splutters affect a quarter of Brits, so for those 16 million snorers, Asda’s Pineapple Plant could be a dream come true – even more-so for sleep deprived partners.

“For those lucky enough to sleep through the night without the disturbance of snoring, the plant is a chic addition to the home which is easy to care for and adds a little touch of The Tropics to any room.”

Asda’s Pineapple Plants are available exclusively at Asda nationwide until January for £12.00

Asda unveils its Christmas Imaginarium

Asda unveils its Christmas Imaginarium

Leeds, UK, 2017-Nov-06 — /EPR Retail News/ — ‘Tis the season for festive adverts and this Sunday evening (5th November), Asda is set to unveil its offer for 2017 with a journey into the magical world of Asda’s very own Christmas workshop – the Imaginarium.

The 60 second ad will launch in the first ad break of X Factor on ITV on Sunday night and according to Asda’s Chief Customer Officer, Andy Murray, the idea came from seeing the reaction of Asda customers when they took part in tasting sessions of Asda’s Christmas range.

Murray explains: “Earlier in the year we held sessions with our customers to get feedback on our Christmas range. As we talked to them about Christmas we could see how much joy and happiness planning their Christmas brought them – we knew we wanted to reflect that in our ad. When we saw their reactions to our food – the way it surprised them and made them smile – as well as the incredible pride and attention to detail our product developers had put into creating it, the inspiration for the Imaginarium was born.”

The ad follows a young girl and her grandfather, who stumble across an intriguing and mysterious looking factory. As they sneak through the gates a magical world unfolds before their eyes and they discover Asda’s Christmas Imaginarium.

Eilidh Macaskill, Asda’s Vice President Creative and Media, explains: “By Combining CGI animation and some spectacular real life venues, the Imaginarium is depicted as a maze of rooms containing magical machines and enchanting experiments. From a reindeer powering an enormous food mixer making Christmas puddings, to bite-sized canapes and mince pies being assembled by miniature Imaginarium workers, and Christmas Smash Igloo cakes being tested by strapping weightlifters, the ad is a love letter to our customers and products.”

On their journey the pair discover the secrets behind Asda’s festive ranges. From a giant pop-up Christmas cookbook revealing two Asda chefs preparing a delicious Christmas dinner of roast turkey and Wagyu beef dripping roast potatoes, to an adult-only, futuristic gin room where truffles are being infused with gin by a giant ‘gin laser’ – the ad reinforces the imaginative ways Asda is working to provide the best Christmas ever for its customers.

Andy Murray, adds: “The care and attention that has gone into listening to our customers and creating our Christmas range this year is really impressiveand the Imaginarium is the perfect showcase for the excitement and ethos behind our products. Whatever your age or budget, Christmas is the time of year when you’re open to a little bit of magic and wondermentand I’m really excited that we’ve been able to do our bit to provide that for our customers this year.

In addition to the 60 second ad, Asda will also air four 30 second adverts during the festive period, revealing more mysteries of the Asda Imaginarium and showcasing more of Asda’s food, George clothing and homeware.

Breast Cancer Now’s ambition is that by 2050 everyone who develops breast cancer will live. The charity is determined to stop women dying from the disease, working in a new, collaborative way and bringing together all those affected by breast cancer to fund research, share knowledge and find answers.

Breast Cancer Now’s world-class research is focused entirely on breast cancer. The charity supports nearly 450 of the world’s brightest researchers at more than 20 locations across the UK and Ireland. Together, they’re working to discover how to prevent breast cancer, how to detect it earlier and how to treat it effectively at every stage so we can stop the disease taking lives.

Breast cancer is still the most common cancer in the UK. Nearly 700,000 people living in the UK have experienced a diagnosis and one in eight women will face it in their lifetime. This year alone, more than 50,000 women will be told they have the disease.

The UK still has one of the lowest breast cancer survival rates in Western Europe and this year alone around 11,500 women and 80 men will lose their lives – that’s nearly 1,000 deaths each month. It’s time to act.

Breast Cancer Now launched in June 2015, created by the merger of leading research charities Breast Cancer Campaign and Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

Asda: ‘Audrey’s Tiger Bread’ named after loyal 85-year-old customer Audrey Bond

Asda: ‘Audrey’s Tiger Bread’ named after loyal 85-year-old customer Audrey Bond

Audrey’s Tiger Bread’ named after loyal 85-year-old customer, Audrey Bond, who has been giving tips and hints to Asda bakers for years on how to improve the product. Audrey captured the hearts of customers after her story hit social media, with fans of the nan urging Asda to honour her. Recognising her keen eye for baking, the leading retailer has invited Audrey to give her stamp of approval on future products

LEEDS, UK, 2017-Oct-10 — /EPR Retail News/ — An 85-year-old Asda customer has had her favourite product named in her honour – ‘Audrey’s Tiger Bread’ – after she gave tips to her local baker, and now close friend, at the Asda Barking store. The loveable nan captured the hearts of Asda customers when her story was shared on social media, with people urging Asda to honour her.

Audrey Bond has helped baker Gary Gordon to improve his bakery teams’ Tiger Chest Bread over the last few years and thanks to her invaluable tips and advice, they have mastered ”perfect” in-store baked bread.

The keen home baker and grandmother of two spotted that some of the bread would come out of the ovens shaped more like a big kidney bean, whilst some loaves would have a parting in the middle. Audrey taught the Barking bakery team how to improve their loaves and believes they are now “as good as they possibly can be”.

Audrey gets the bus to the store pretty much every day of the week without fail and brings in her home-baked goodies for Gary and the team, with the favourite being her banana and walnut cake, which Gary says is “just the best”.

In recognition of her pivotal role in helping Gary and his team improve their products, Audrey has been invited to form part of the Asda Tasting Panel. She has given her seal of approval across the retailer’s bakery selection, including breads and cakes, selecting her favourites from the range and ensuring products meet her high standards. Some of her stand out lines are Extra Special Olive Bread which she says is “delicious” and the in-store baked lemon muffins.

Audrey said: “I can’t believe Asda have renamed their tiger bread after me – it’s such a shock! I’m looking forward to sharing the news with my son who lives in Cyprus and sending him a loaf of Audrey’s Tiger Bread. I get people stopping me on the bus on the way to Asda or saying hello to me in the store after they saw me with Gary online, it really makes my day.”.

An Asda spokesperson said: “Our colleagues often go the extra mile for customers, but on this occasion Audrey has helped us to improve our products and we can’t thank her enough. As a loyal customer and passionate baker, we were delighted to put Audrey’s name on the side of our Tiger Bread. We think we have found our very own Queen of Baking.”

Asda: Customers can enjoy British tomatoes all-year-round thanks to innovative LED technology

Asda: Customers can enjoy British tomatoes all-year-round thanks to innovative LED technology

Asda leads the way in technological innovation for tomatoes, which will see British tomatoes available all-year-round. Just over 200 million tomatoes are plucked from the LED-laden vines for Asda each year

LEEDS, UK, 2017-Oct-10 — /EPR Retail News/ — Customers can enjoy British tomatoes at Asda all-year-round thanks to innovative light technology, which is tipped to set the precedent for produce across the nation in the next decade. Typically, between December and March, retailer’s source tomatoes from Spain or Morocco, but this new technology will lead to thousands more tonnes of tomatoes grown on British soil every year, reducing food miles and ensuring optimum freshness on shelf.

The light technology is currently being used by a farmer in Southport across 31 acres of glasshouses growing tomatoes. Installed between the vines and coloured bright pink, the LED lighting supplements natural daylight so that crops can be grown efficiently at all times of the year, no matter what the weather.

In addition to ensuring British tomatoes can be stocked every month, the LED technology helps reduce the total energy required to run the greenhouse by up to 35% through mitigating the need for excessive heating and ventilation, meaning the tomato growing process remains environmentally friendly.

Andy Roe, Tomato Production Manager, who has supplied Asda with tomatoes for over 20 years, comments: “I can say with confidence that by using this technology, I could grow a tomato absolutely anywhere – underground, in a Tube carriage, on the Moon. The beauty of this technology is that it hands complete control over to the growers, who can monitor levels and adjust accordingly to ensure the best quality products possible are hitting Asda’s shelves. Whilst we may be the first UK growers to work with the technology, this is the way forward for horticulturalists across the globe.”

Each year, Andy and his team of growers pick just over 200 million tomatoes.

Ian Harrison, Asda Technical Director, comments: “We pride ourselves on working closely with growers to make sure together we provide the best quality produce possible for our customers. Beyond the benefits to UK growers, this forward-thinking technology means not a single ounce of quality, taste or appearance is diminished in our tomatoes. This year alone, we’ve seen 40 million punnets of tomatoes sold from our shelves.”

Asda stocks 11 different varieties of British tomato, including Extra Special Aromatico, to its award-winning Extra Special Tomkin.

Asda introduces the NEW Takeaway Cheesy Chips Mega Pizza

Asda introduces the NEW Takeaway Cheesy Chips Mega Pizza

LEEDS, UK, 2017-Oct-04 — /EPR Retail News/ — Asda introduces its most deliciously decadent pizza yet. The NEW Takeaway Cheesy Chips Mega Pizza is inspired by one of the nation’s favourite guilty pleasures. The novel creation follows the recent food frenzy around extravagant inventions such as the Mac ‘N’ Cheese Pizza and Lotta-Chocca Pizza

What could possibly be better than crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside chips covered in tangy melted cheese? When they’re loaded on top of a delicious, deep-pan cheese and tomato pizza base. Naturally.

Asda has seen two wondrous worlds collide with the launch of its latest creation  the NEWTakeaway Cheesy Chips Mega Pizza – combining two of the nation’s favourite dishes. It consists of a bed of fries slathered with a truly tempting three cheese mix and sweet chilli sauce, kicking back on a 13.5-inch pizza base.

As winter approaches and the urge to spend Saturday nights snuggled up in front of X Factor or your favourite box set grows, the moreish mash-up rivals the extravagance of takeaway favourites such as Mac ‘n’ Cheese Pizza and Lotta-Chocca Pizza and is mere quarter of the price of popular pizza chains.

An Asda spokesperson, said: “We know the nation has a soft spot for cheesy chips, it’s an undeniable guilty pleasure that deserves to be honoured and what better way than on top of a pizza? If you’re looking for the ultimate indulgence to create the perfect Big Night In, look no further.”

Asda range of mega 13.5 inch takeaway pizzas also includes the Takeaway Mac ‘n’ Cheese Mega Pizza and the Takeaway Beef Kebab Mega Pizza.

Asda’s new Takeaway Cheesy Chips Mega Pizza will be available in Asda stores from 25thSeptember with a RRP of £4.00.
