Old Navy donates $1 million to Boys & Girls Clubs following successful Black Friday donation campaign

OVERWHELMING CUSTOMER RESPONSE TO BLACK FRIDAY COZY SOCK TRIGGER DONATION FUNDS FIRST JOBS PROGRAM FOR CLUB TEENS

SAN FRANCISCO, 2017-Nov-29 — /EPR Retail News/ — Timed to Giving Tuesday, Old Navy is donating $1 million to Boys & Girls Clubs after a successful Black Friday trigger donation campaign.

On Black Friday, Old Navy offered customers the opportunity to get cozy while giving back. For every pair of $1 Cozy Socks purchased in-store on Black Friday, Old Navy pledged $1 to Boys & Girls Clubs, up to $1 million. Customers paid it forward and stocked up on the playful novelty print socks. Over 2 million pairs of cozy socks were sold, enough to line the entire coastline of California.1

“At Old Navy, we believe in paying it forward. Opening doors for youth and helping them build promising futures is just one of the ways we give back,” said Sonia Syngal, president & CEO, Old Navy. “We are in this together – our teams, our families, our communities. That’s why this Black Friday, we welcomed shoppers to join us in that mission through our Cozy Sock trigger donation campaign. And we are so proud to make this $1 million donation to Boys & Girls Clubs as part of our continuing ONward! program.”

Through its cause platform ONward!, Old Navy is committed to taking the next generation to the next level, and has long supported Boys & Girls Clubs to help turn learners into leaders. The $1 million donation will go to creating an employment program for Boys & Girls Club youth2, offering them career mentoring and a first job at Old Navy stores.

“We are grateful for Old Navy’s partnership and their continued commitment to supporting America’s youth,” said Jim Clark, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of America. “Old Navy’s donation will help our young people reach their full potential as productive and responsible citizens.”

Old Navy believes in giving the next generation a foot in the door for the future. Through the This Way Ahead job training program, Gap Inc. has committed to providing 10,000 jobs for youth from local nonprofits by 2020. The partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs will help expand the program to impact more young adults in additional cities. Learn more about Old Navy’s cause work at Oldnavy.com/ONward.

REI Co-op will close stores on Black Friday; will pay all 12,000 employees to #OptOutside with family and friends

Outdoor co-op launches experiential search engine powered by millions who have chosen to #OptOutside

SEATTLE, 2017-Nov-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — For the third year running, REI Co-op, the nation’s largest consumer co-op and specialty outdoor retailer, has announced that it will close its 151 stores on Black Friday, process no online sales and pay all 12,000 employees to #OptOutside with family and friends.

Each year, REI gives more than 70 percent of its profits back to the outdoor community. Rather than seek to pull shoppers inside for this Thanksgiving weekend, REI is launching a new experiential search engine at REI.com/opt-outside to help inspire and enable people to get outside. It’s powered by the individual and collective experiences of the outdoor community and free for all to use.

“We are doing this again to unite people and to find common ground in the outdoors,” said REI CEO Jerry Stritzke. “Right now, I think people are looking for a moment to take a breath, reground themselves and come together. More than 700 organizations and nearly 8 million people have joined #OptOutside over the past two years. We could not be more thankful. But last year we stepped back and said we can do more. We asked how we could offer new practical tools and inspiration. So we have captured the experiences of the outdoor community and organized them in a way that no one has done before.”

At the heart of this year’s effort, the new experiential search engine from REI is designed to inspire millions of people to #OptOutside. It features images pulled entirely from #OptOutside user-generated content (UGC) on Instagram, augmented with real-time information about locations and experiences across the country. For example, users who click on an image of a hiker can see the name of the specific trail featured, the trail’s difficulty rating, directions to the trailhead, recent user reviews of the experience and related expert advice from REI. Beginning today and leading up to Black Friday, the co-op will release 20 films featuring this community-created imagery to connect people through their shared #OptOutside experiences.

The co-op’s efforts to get more people outside do not begin and end with #OptOutside. Year-round, the co-op partners with hundreds of local and national organizations, nonprofits and governmental agencies, championing the outdoor life by implementing and encouraging others to adopt the highest sustainability standards and working to increase access to the outdoors for everyone.

About the REI Co-op
REI is a specialty outdoor retailer, headquartered near Seattle. The nation’s largest consumer co-op, REI is a growing community of more than 16 million members who expect and love the best quality gear, inspiring expert classes and trips, and outstanding customer service. REI has 151 stores in 36 states. If you can’t visit a store, you can shop at REI.comREI-Garage.com or the free REI shopping app. REI isn’t just about gear. You can take the trip of a lifetime with REI Adventures, a global leader in active adventure travel that runs more than 170 custom-designed itineraries worldwide. The REI Outdoor School is run by professionally-trained, expert-instructors who teach beginner-to advanced-level courses about a wide range of activities. To build on the infrastructure that makes life outside possible, REI invests millions annually in hundreds of local and national nonprofits that create access to—and steward—the outdoor places that inspire us all.

State parks join organizations in helping people spend more time outdoors as they waive fees on Black Friday

Outdoor adventurers can visit park systems in 22 states for free on November 25

SEATTLE, 2016-Nov-19 — /EPR Retail News/ — As millions of adventurers choose to #OptOutside on Black Friday, several states across the country have announced their plans to waive fees to park systems on November 25. State parks join a growing number (475 to date) of corporate, nonprofit and public sector organizations that are helping people spend more time in the outdoors this holiday season, and several state, local and federal parks that are always free.

“More than 1.8 million people are planning to #OptOutside with us on Black Friday. It’s amazing to see so many park systems join in the movement to give Americans even more ways to connect with our country’s inspiring outdoor places. We are grateful for the park stewards and professionals who make the outdoor American experience so vibrant,” said Jerry Stritzke, REI’s CEO and president.

“America’s state parks are a tonic for the mind, body and spirit,” said Lewis Ledford, executive director of the National Association of State Park Directors. “These experiences can be enjoyed within a short drive from home virtually anywhere in the country.”

State park systems that are waiving fees on Black Friday include:

  • Arizona*
  • Kansas
  • Oregon
  • California*
  • Michigan
  • Vermont
  • Colorado
  • Minnesota
  • Virginia*
  • Delaware
  • Nevada*
  • Indiana
  • New Mexico

State park systems that have free basic admission every day include:

  • Arkansas
  • Missouri
  • Ohio
  • Illinois
  • Montana*
  • Pennsylvania
  • Iowa
  • North Carolina
  • Tennessee

For the past three weeks, REI has helped promote different leaders discussing the importance of building and sustaining local, state and national outdoor places. Two of these perspectives, which were featured on REI’s Co-op Journal, include:

  • Will Rogers, President and CEO of the Trust for Public Land, recently noted that in 25 of the country’s largest cities, “more than half of residents under age nineteen don’t have a place to play outdoors close to home.”
  • Martha Roskowski, vice president of Innovation at People for Bikes, also recently highlighted the importance of building cycling networks within our towns and cities, so commuting to nearby places to play outdoors is easier.

Additional information on #OptOutside, the co-op’s partners and how to join the movement is available at REI.com/opt-outside.

That National Association of State Park Directors promotes and advances the state park systems of America for their own significance, as well as for their important contributions to the nation’s environment, heritage, health and economy. Additional details are available at www.naspd.org.

#OptOutside: REI to close its doors on Black Friday to encourage people embrace the outdoors and create new holiday tradition

  • Outdoor co-op will shut all 149 of its doors on Black Friday, process no online sales and pay all 12,287 employees to take the day off and head outside instead
  • This year, more than 275 national and local organizations form movement to invite millions of people to participate
  • New outdoor activity finder launched at REI.com/opt-outside to help people reconnect with family and friends this holiday season and declare support

SEATTLE, 2016-Oct-25 — /EPR Retail News/ — REI, the $2.4 billion outdoor co-op, has announced that it will close its doors once more this Black Friday. Stepping up its effort to create a cultural counterweight to Black Friday, REI says that it is giving #OptOutside to the outdoor community to lift up and celebrate the people who dedicate their lives to the outdoors. A vast network of organizations has united already to mobilize millions more to embrace the outdoors and create a new holiday tradition for all Americans.

“This year, REI will shut down on both Thanksgiving and Black Friday because fundamentally we believe that being outside makes us our best selves – healthier and happier, physically and mentally. But as a nation we’re still spending over 90 percent of our lives indoors and it’s a trend we need to tackle,” said REI CEO Jerry Stritzke. “I love that there is a community of people in this country who dedicate their lives to that mission, so together, we are asking America “Will you go out with us?”

REI is putting power in the hands of more than 6 million co-op members and lovers of the outdoors, asking every individual to invite someone else to choose the outdoors over fighting it out in the aisles. REI.com/opt-outside will serve as the hub to get involved, declare support, invite others to join the movement or simply find a place to play outdoors. Visitors can upload photos, share through social media, discover thousands of trails and parks nearby or get connected with non-profits that steward the outdoors.

REI gives 70 percent of its profits back to the outdoor community annually and has united more than 275 non-profit, government and corporate partners to inspire millions of people to hit the trails, parks and waterways on November 25. Details on the partners and stories of their contributions can be read on the Co-op Journal at http://blog.rei.com/news/optoutside-will-you-go-out-with-us/.

Stritzke continued, “The moment we announced our decision last year, people who build their lives around the outdoors really embraced the idea of reclaiming Black Friday. It took on a life of its own and became about much more than REI. #OptOutside should be a platform for the nonprofits and public servants who are on the front lines of the outdoor community. They’re the ones who make the outdoors accessible for everyone. That’s why, from today onward, we’re going to lift them up as the official spokespeople for #OptOutside.”

During #OptOutside, experts from the outdoor community will share perspectives on topics including the power of nature to heal, the value of childhood play outdoors, the value of nurturing and conserving our public lands and the increasing need for diversity in the outdoors. Viewpoints will be published by the co-op on Co-op Journal and promoted by REI through social media in an effort to explore the idea that a life outdoors is a life well lived.

FOR MEDIA: B-Roll and photo assets are available in the REI Newsroom.

Appendix: This year, at launch, more than 275 organizations are already involved. Many more are expected to join by Black Friday.

Nonprofits and government agencies that steward the outdoors are at the heart of this effort. Organizations representing thousands of local chapters across the country have already joined #OptOutside:

  • Diversity In The Outdoors: Six nonprofits focused on increasing diversity in the outdoors will be hosting events all across the country. Our partners in this effort are 52 Hike Challenge, Black Girls Run, Camber Outdoors, Girl Trek, Natural Leaders Network and Outdoor Afro.
  • Local Nonprofit Impact: Local trails and outdoors advocacy groups, including Friends of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Buckeye Trails Association, the Mississippi Park Connection and others will lead events on Black Friday to get people into the outdoors.
  • The National Parks Service is spreading the #OptOutside message to all park employees and The National Park Foundation, with the Parks’ friends groups.
  • More Joining Every Day: Dozens of other major nonprofits have joined with their own unique expression of #OptOutside. For example, the Trust for Public Land will a host pre-Black Friday event at a local San Francisco park the week before Thanksgiving to raise awareness, which several other groups have discussed doing. And The Sierra Club will help amplify #OptOutside by leveraging its social media and digital channels, which reach its 2.4 million members and supporters engaged in 63 chapters across the country.

Companies with a genuine passion for the outdoors have joined us:

  • Subaru of America. Subaru of America will be bringing together two of its drivers’ passions, the outdoors and pets, and inviting pet lovers everywhere to #OptOutside with their four-legged friends on Black Friday. To help those dogs who need to #OptOutside the most, Subaru of America will be providing a fleet of vehicles and drivers in New York City to take shelter dogs out of their cages and into nature for the day. Target: Unprecedented results on Target.com and a strong turnout in stores on Thanksgiving Day

Record setting online sales and strong in-store traffic mark start of Target’s holiday season

MINNEAPOLIS, 2015-11-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — Target Corporation (NYSE: TGT) today reported a successful start to its Black Friday weekend, with unprecedented results on Target.com and a strong turnout in stores on Thanksgiving Day.

“Target got a head start going into Black Friday with the record-breaking launch of Adele’s new album and our ‘10 Days of Deals’ promotion. The momentum continued with our Black Friday presale, and on Thanksgiving, we saw millions of shoppers take advantage of great offers online and in our stores. Overall, the response from our guests has been very positive, with some of the best days we’ve seen on Target.com,” said Brian Cornell, Chairman of the Board and CEO Target, who greeted holiday shoppers at the Jersey City Target Store in New Jersey on Thanksgiving. “We expect to see the demand continue throughout the weekend and into December as we offer more savings on the year’s most popular gifts, including Star Wars and Apple products.”

“10 Days of Deals” and Black Friday Pre-Sale

Target’s “10 Days of Deals” began Sunday, Nov. 22, giving guests daily offers, including 10 percent off electronics and 20 percent off kitchenware. As part of the promotion, Target brought back the Black Friday pre-sale on Wednesday, Nov. 25. Sales were strong with the most popular items being Apple Watch and Apple iPads, Beats Solo 2 headphones, FitBit Charge HR and the Philips Sonicare 2 electric toothbrush.

Thanksgiving Day Access to Black Friday Sale

Guests were granted early access to nearly all of Target’s doorbusters on Target.com beginning Thanksgiving morning. Demand outpaced 2014’s record Thanksgiving performance, making it Target’s biggest day for online sales yet, driven largely by electronics.

Guests also continued to use the Order Pickup option at Target.com. Before 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving, the number of orders placed for in-store pick up increased by 35 percent as compared to 2014.

Top selling Black Friday items:

  • Apple iPads were top sellers in stores and online. On average, Target sold an iPad every second throughout the day on Thanksgiving. Apple Watch was especially popular in stores.
  • Gaming consoles were popular in stores and online, including Nintendo Wii U, which was the top selling item on Target.com.
  • TVs were one of most sought after items in stores— the 55” Westinghouse at $249.99 was Target’s top selling TV.
  • Movies were a big hit in stores with guests buying more than 3 million on Thanksgiving.
  • A three-foot stuffed teddy bear, priced at $10, was a surprise hit, with some stores selling out in minutes.
  • Top toys included LEGO, Barbie, Disney Princess and Star Wars. Target exclusives generated nearly one-third of Star Wars toy sales for the day.
  • Beats Solo 2 headphones were one of the top sellers on Target.com and in stores at $96.99 (reg. $199.99).

The Savings Continue—Spend $75, Get 20 Percent Off

Target’s “10 Days of Deals” continues through Tuesday, Dec. 1. Today, guests who spend $75 or more receive a 20 percent discount to use toward a future purchase on any day between Dec. 4 and Dec. 13. Additional offers include:

  • Saturday, Nov. 28: $50 off holiday shop purchase of $100 more
  • Sunday, Nov. 29: Buy two, get one free action figures and fashion dolls
  • Monday, Nov. 30: 15 percent off Target.com
  • Tuesday, Dec. 1: 25 percent off all beauty

As always, guests can use their REDcard for an additional five percent off on top of other discounts. Online shoppers can continue to take advantage of free shipping on Target.com through Dec. 25. And the 21 million savvy deal seekers who use Cartwheel will continue to find thousands of offers throughout the holiday season.

NRF’s Preliminary Thanksgiving Weekend Survey: Millennials love Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday Shopping

WASHINGTON, 2015-11-20 — /EPR Retail News/ — Although nearly 60 percent of holiday shoppers had already started checking off their shopping lists by November 10, millions more are eagerly waiting to hear what retailers have in store – and online – for the biggest holiday shopping weekend of the year. According to NRF’s Preliminary Thanksgiving Weekend Survey, an estimated 135.8 million shoppers (58.7%) definitely will or may shop on Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and/or Sunday, similar to the 61.1 percent who planned to last year and more than the 55 percent of holiday shoppers who said they did shop in stores and online over the weekend in 2014.

NRF’s 2014 Thanksgiving Weekend results Survey found 133.7 million holiday shoppers were in stores and online over the holiday weekend.

“The importance of Thanksgiving weekend to both retailers and consumers will never change. However, retailers have already given consumers several good reasons to start their holiday shopping earlier,” said NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay. “We suspect early holiday shoppers could still be on the fence about whether or not to try their hand at finding online and in- store deals Thanksgiving weekend.”

“To make it even easier on holiday shoppers this year, we expect retailers will offer exclusive savings each day of the big weekend, including Thanksgiving and Black Friday-only deals and even extended Cyber Monday promotions throughout the week that follows,” continued Shay. “But this weekend isn’t the end-all-be-all; it’s important to remember, there will be several important weekends to keep an eye on before we wrap up the holiday season.”

Of those who plan to or are anticipating they may shop online or in store over the weekend, most will shop on Black Friday (73.5% vs. 68.2% from NRF’s preliminary survey in 2014), though 22.3 percent say they are eagerly anticipating retailers’ Thanksgiving Day deals, compared to 18.3 percent in NRF’s preliminary 2014 survey. Saturday is often overlooked because it’s sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but the numbers speak for themselves: 49 percent of those surveyed say they will shop in stores and online on Saturday, up from the 42.9 percent in last year’s preliminary survey. One in five (23.1%) say they will or may shop on Sunday.

NRF also asked those Saturday shoppers if they would specifically shop for Small Business Saturday: the survey found 22.3 percent said they would and 54 percent say maybe.

And for the first year NRF asked about plans to shop on Cyber Monday. According to the survey 79.6 percent – or a potential 183.8 million unique shoppers – said they would or may shop on Cyber Monday.

Millennials love Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday Shopping

When it comes to holiday celebrations over the Thanksgiving weekend, it is clear millennials are still quite interested in being a part of the shopping experience. According to the survey 77.8 percent of 18-24 year olds and 77.4 percent of 25-34 year olds said they definitely will or may shop online and in stores over the Thanksgiving weekend.

“Millennials love shopping in stores and online over Thanksgiving weekend for several reasons, including the opportunities afforded to them that allow them to splurge on ‘non-gifts’ for themselves and even the potential to sleep in on Black Friday after having spent the night before bouncing from store to store,” said Prosper’s Principal Analyst Pam Goodfellow. “For these adults, it’s less about making room for pumpkin pie and more about going out with friends, checking out the deals through their mobile phones and experiencing retailers’ night owl hours and perhaps making a dent in their shopping lists.”

“Given how shoppers today overall gravitate towards all things digital, there’s a high likelihood online shopping will be bigger than ever over the holiday weekend and on Cyber Monday,” continued Goodfellow.

Although the entire weekend is seen as one big social experience, Black Friday is expected to be the biggest day for these age groups. Of those millennials who will or may shop over the holiday weekend, the survey found 84.3 percent of 18-24 year olds and 80.2 percent of 25-34 year olds say they will shop on Black Friday. One-quarter (25.4%) of 18-24 year olds will or may shop on Thanksgiving Day and nearly one-third (32.7%) of 25-34 year olds will make room for shopping after turkey and dessert.

Twenty-five to 34 year olds also seem to be more likely to specifically support Small Business Saturday: 34.7 percent of those who are planning to or may shop on Saturday will specifically shop to support small businesses over the weekend.

And when it comes to Cyber Monday, there’s no question that young adults still love the idea of exclusive Cyber Monday deals. According to the survey 88.7 percent of 18-24 year olds and 90.9 percent of 25-34 year olds say yes or maybe when asked if they will shop online on Cyber Monday.

International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) 2015 Holiday Guide released on The Center of Shopping’s website

All the latest holiday data and findings one click away.

NEW YORK, 2015-11-16 — /EPR Retail News/ — How much money are shoppers spending this holiday season? On Black Friday? Super Saturday? Do shopping centers prefer to hire Santas with real beards or will costume accessories suffice? How are omnichannel and technology trends influencing holiday shoppers?

Find out the scoop this holiday season via the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) “2015 Holiday Guide,” accessible via the website The Center of Shopping. The content heavy collection will serve as a tremendous resource throughout the 2015 season.

The site will act as a gift that keeps on giving, constantly updated with ICSC’s latest forecasts, spending data and trends. The guide is currently populated with data, visuals and commentary by ICSC’s Director of Research in addition to related content like ICSC’s holiday forecast.

While the data will cover every aspect of the season relating to the retail real estate industry, the pieces are connected by a common denominator. This holiday season, purchase- and purpose- driven individuals will be out in full force at America’s Marketplaces: shopping centers.

Longer Season, Deeper pockets

Holiday shoppers in particular will be willing to spend more, but will also be more knowledgeable about products. Enticed by promotions and faced with an elongated season, shoppers will start their purchases earlier, but complete them later. Shoppers will also be cannier about purchases as a result of online research, mobile devices and multiple channels of distributions.

‘Tis the giving season

The gain in spending ($702 in 2015 compared to $677 in 2014) is fueled in part by an increase in the number of people for whom shoppers will buy gifts. Also of note, approximately 40% of all adults in the United States intend to contribute to, or participate in, philanthropic events occurring at malls and shopping centers this holiday season.

Next up, Black Friday!

ICSC predicts 41% of holiday shoppers will hit the pavement on Black Friday – the most of any holiday shopping days. See how ICSC’s forecast plays out and be on the lookout for ICSC’s Black Friday survey next week, followed by results after the holiday.

Stay tuned to follow the season’s most important research and findings, in real time, on The Center of Shopping.

About ICSC
Founded in 1957, ICSC is the global trade association of the shopping center industry. Its more than 70,000 members in over 100 countries include shopping center owners, developers, managers, investors, retailers, brokers, academics, and public officials. The shopping center industry is essential to economic development and opportunity. They are a significant job creator, driver of GDP, and critical revenue source for the communities they serve through the generation of sales taxes and the payment of property taxes. These taxes fund important municipal services like firefighters, police officers, school services, and infrastructure like roadways and parks. Shopping centers aren’t only fiscal engines however; they are integral to the social fabric of their communities by providing a central place to congregate with friends and family, discuss community matters, and participate in and encourage philanthropic endeavors. Argos to launch ‘Red, White and Blue’ Fridays leading up to Black Friday as part of its Christmas campaign

Milton Keynes, UK, 2015-11-10 — /EPR Retail News/ — Leading UK retailer Argos will launch ‘Red, White and Blue’ Fridays leading up to Black Friday as part of its Christmas campaign.

Deals designed to put pounds back in British shoppers’ pockets will be available every weekend so that customers don’t have to wait for weeks to get the Christmas shopping started and will find it easier to plan and budget over several weeks rather than one weekend.

Kicking off today (Friday 6 November), highly competitive ‘feel-good’ deals on offer at Argos include:

  • ‘3 for 2’ on all toys for five days
  • The first of five one-day market-beating deals – today’s being the new Call of Duty Black Ops 3 at £39.99
  • Five day deals launching today include the LG 4K Ultra HD 40” Freeview TV reduced by £300 to £399, a saving of £70 on Beats Solo 2 On Ear Headphones at £99.99 and the Canon SX410 20MP Camera at less than half price at just £99.99.

Argos believes the deals are so strong it guarantees to offer the difference if customers find the deals cheaper elsewhere¹.

All deals are available in stores and online and customers wanting their bargains in a hurry can take advantage of Argos’ new UK-wide Fast Track same-day home delivery service which is currently free for orders of £50 and over².  Customers purchasing online for Fast Track store pick-up in as little as 60 seconds can also currently get £1 money back on orders over £25².

David Robinson, Chief Operating Officer at Argos, said: “Customers just can’t wait to start their Christmas shopping and we want to reclaim Fridays for Brits and celebrate them every week between now and Christmas. Fridays have always been a special day in the minds of the British public, whether it represents fish ‘n’ chips, drinks down the pub or simply the start of the weekend.

“We are, of course, gearing up for Black Friday like everyone else, but we don’t think getting a great deal should wait until then and this weekend we know our customers will love our famous ‘3 for 2’ toys event and amazing ‘feel-good’ deals.

Black Friday has several alleged definitions, including being a term coined in the United States by the Philadelphia Police department in the 1950s and 1960s to describe the chaos in the cities caused by the traffic jams and sheer volume of shoppers who came out to grab the best deals.
