UK: Currys PC World rolls out 2017 Christmas advertising campaign

  • UK’s leading electrical retailer unveils new £6 million advertising campaign, offering viewers the expertise and advice they need to Get It Right this Christmas
  • New festive campaign dramatises three scenarios in which Currys PC World colleagues have been given products to experience in their own home lives, featuring Apple, Bose® and LG

London, 2017-Nov-04 — /EPR Retail News/ — Currys PC World today (2nd November 2017) unveils its latest Christmas advertising campaign, rolling out across TV, video on demand, social and online (YouTube) in the UK.

The new ATL creative showcases how the UK’s leading electrical retailer helps customers ‘get it right,’ at Christmas, with first-hand advice and recommendations from Currys PC World store colleagues.

For the third year running, humorous family scenarios are used bring to life the difficulties in choosing the right Christmas gifts, presenting Currys PC World as the solution to this problem – with the right gadgets and colleague expertise available to help.

The three installments dramatise a real-life initiative by the retailer which allows store colleagues to try out Currys PC World products for themselves at home, so that they’re able to give truly first-hand advice to shoppers in store.

This year’s campaign features technology from three key brands including a proud Dad attempting to be ‘down with the kids’ while parading his new Bose® product range; a family putting the latest Apple products (and their Father) through their paces and a hilarious Mum-Dad double act declaring a ‘tech free’ Christmas to a bewildered audience, before proudly showing off the latest LG OLED 4K ready TV, in all its glory.

While the ads centre around humour and several light-hearted moments, they also demonstrate that the retailer has an effective blend of the right services, right products and right prices, to help customers ‘get it right’ this Christmas.

The campaign will feature 40” hero TV executions alongside a suite of 10 sponsorship idents breaking over November and December, starting on air from Wednesday 1st November, and is supported by promotional activity throughout November and December.

The ads will appear during some high-profile television slots on ITV (Coronation Street, Doc Martin, Jonathan Ross, The X Factor and Sheridan) and Channel 4 (Ugly House to Lovely House, Celebrity First Dates and The Last Leg) across November, as well as commercial broadcasters including ITV, C4, C5 and Sky Multichannel.

The campaign is one element of a fully-integrated nationwide campaign, set to incorporate all areas of the business right down through to Currys PC World stores.

Georgina Bramall, Head of Brand and Advertising, Dixons Carphone: “As market leaders, it’s our job to set an example and do everything we can to help customers ‘get it right’ at Christmas – so it makes complete sense that our own store colleagues test-out and get hands-on with the products for themselves. Being able to access expert advice from people who know and love technology is not just reassuring – it’s essential. Increasingly, this is what sets us apart from our competitors in the minds of our customers and our suppliers”

Colin Jones and Phil Martin, Creative Directors, AMV BBDO: “This campaign playfully celebrates the important role in-store colleagues play in helping customers choose the perfect Christmas gift, from the wide range of entertainment and gifting lines available at Currys PC World. Each Christmas, gift buying can become a puzzling and dreaded task, but with advice honed by colleagues who have tried the products in their own lives, Currys PC World can help you get it right.”

Working with retained creative agency AMV BBDO and media agency Blue 449, the new ATL campaign from Currys PC World will feature across TV, print and digital platforms. The campaign launches with a 40 second TV spot running until 24th December.

Currys PC World teams up with maths whizz Rachel Riley to solve Brits’ festive shopping conundrums

Currys PC World teams up with maths whizz Rachel Riley to solve Brits’ festive shopping conundrums

As more than a third of Brits cite lack of ideas the hardest part of Christmas shopping, Currys PC World teams up with maths whizz Rachel Riley to solve Brits’ festive shopping conundrums

LONDON, 2016-Dec-09 — /EPR Retail News/ — COMMUTING, paying bills and moving house – they’re all events prone to inducing stress but none so much as Christmas shopping – according to a new study by Currys PC World.

The study of over 2,000 Brits reveals that almost a quarter (22%) of the nation find Christmas shopping the most stressful time of year – and for a third (31%), it’s the actual coming up with gift ideas that’s proving the most stressful part of festive present-buying.

In order to combat this, Currys PC World is today unveiling a unique scientific formula developed by TV presenter and mathematician Rachel Riley, alongside Essex University statistician Dr Dai, to help customers get it right this Christmas and ensure the buying is as enjoyable as the giving this festive season.

Incorporating a combination of whether hints from the receiver were given or not, the number of recipients, the difficulty of the person you are buying for, and the amount you have to spend, the mathematical Science Of Getting It Right formula creates the probability of getting all your presents right this year.

The formula is as follows:

With the average Brit buying for four adults and two children and spending an average of £21-30 per head, the research reveals that it’s our partners we find the most difficult to buy for, followed by our children, dads and mums.

As a result of a lack of festive inspiration, 12% of the nation has ended up being late in giving their loved ones their present, a third (29%) have panic bought more than they planned to, two fifths (40%) have resorted to giving a voucher and one in ten have simply bought the first thing they’ve seen. For an unlucky one in twenty, they didn’t end up getting a gift at all as a result of their loved ones’ lack of inspiration.

The research also reveals that while a proportion of us are relatively forward-thinking when it comes to Christmas shopping, with 13% starting to plan six months or more in advance, for the majority of Brits (59%) it’s not until a month before the big day that we actually start buying.

Rachel Riley comments “We’ve all been there – you’ve left present buying to the last minute, haven’t a clue what to buy your loved ones and the panic is starting to set in. That’s why I’ve teamed up with Currys PC World to create this mathematically-derived formula to help those who aren’t overly confident with their gift ideas to give them the focus they need to get it right this Christmas. That way, customers can be confident their presents will be greeted with a smile, and not a receipt request!”

Currys PC World’s top tips to Get it Right this Christmas:

Use Rachel Riley’s scientific formula to check the probability of you getting it right this Christmas – if it’s high, well done! If not, Currys PC World has everything you need to put things right:

  • Make use of the Currys PC World’s in-store KnowHow team to get their expert advice on picking the perfect gift for your loved ones
  • Message the Currys PC World Giftologist to gain extra inspiration and personal recommendations
  • Shop with confidence – Currys PC World’s Price Promise means that the retailer promises to match or beat the prices at AO.com, Argos, Asda, John Lewis and Tesco
  • Do your research – Currys PC World’s website has a wealth of information to help you pick the right products including this handy guide to get you started

Bose and Currys PC World research reveals top music genre London commuters listen to

London, 2016-Aug-22 — /EPR Retail News/ — If you thought that your fellow commuters were starting the day with an upbeat dance track, you’d be wrong. New research by Bose and Currys PC World reveals that the top genre to listen to while making your daily commute is Rock, with 19% of Londoners choosing this type of music.

Trailing closely behind is Pop music (16%) beating out both RnB (10%) and House/Techno (7%). Perhaps surprisingly, Classical music (7%) ranks higher on the chart than Hip Hop/Rap (5%), Drum n Bass (4%), and Reggae (3%).

In terms of most popular artists, Beyonce reigns over the charts, followed by Rihanna and Drake for joint second, and Katy Perry in third. London it seems has fallen out of love with its own artists, with Adele the only London-born artist to make it in the city’s top 5 artists.

Looking more closely at favourite artists per genre reveals Drum n Bass lovers prefer Rudimental, Jazz listeners tune into Amy Winehouse, and fans of Indie music rate the Arctic Monkeys.

So if you’re intrigued to know if Adele or Skepta is top of your fellow passengers’ playlists, check out our infographic below. It’s jam-packed with interesting stats and facts about London’s music tastes.

Currys PC World report shows most British parents turn to “tech rewards” for children’s good behaviour and academic success

LONDON, 2016-Aug-22 — /EPR Retail News/ — British parents are turning to “tech rewards” to keep their children’s behaviour and school progress on the straight and narrow, according to a new report by Currys PC World.

New research of the nation’s parents has found that a staggering 64 percent admit to purchasing tablets, laptops and mobile phones as a reward for good behaviour and academic success, with 12 percent doing so more than five times a year. 38 percent of parents believe that using tech rewards pushes their children to do better and 26 per cent do it as they believe it makes them happy.

According to the research, more than one in ten (14 percent) have bought their child a mobile phone as a reward – while 12 percent have bought a tablet, nine percent a games console and eight percent a laptop.

Good A-level and GCSE results emerged as the top two scenarios in which parents will splash out on tech-bribes, with 43 percent of parents admitting they have used a tech “carrot” to dangle over their children to get the top grades.

Astonishingly, the average spend on a single tech reward emerged as a whopping £293 – according to the data. Those living in London spend almost twice as much as those living in the north of England – £501 compared with £252. However, despite the costs – tech bribes seem to be working for the nation’s parents’ – with 72 percent claiming electronic gifts has had a marked positive effect on their lives.

Boys emerged as the sex that responds better to bribes, with 32 percent of parents saying tech bribes work better on boys – compared to just 15 percent for girls, and dads are more likely to offer bribes than mums.

However, the Currys PC World research found that parents don’t keep the bribes simply for achieving good grades alone – they’re also rewarding children for general good behaviour, with 23 percent admitting they have splashed out on tech for their children in return for being good. 16 percent have forked out on a gadget following a successful driving test – and a further 16 percent simply for helping out with day-to-day chores.

The research also revealed tech punishments work just as well as tech bribes – with 74 percent saying taking confiscating a tablet, laptop or mobile phone was their punishment of choice. More than a fifth even take away the techy item more than five times a week with parents aged 30-44 admitting they’ve done this a lot in the past. In fact, 89 percent said taking away their tech was considerably more effective than the now defunct method of “grounding”.

Computing Commercial Director for Currys PC World, Phil Samuels, comments: “With the wealth of tech products now available and so engrained in children of today’s lives, it’s no wonder that parents are using these to incentivise them to do well. While money continues to play a role in rewarding good exam results, our research shows parents are increasingly looking for specific practical items that can help their child’s development too – such as laptops, tablets and mobile phones.”

Currys PC World launches new campaign – ‘Get Started’ to highlight its new lifestyle based segmentation of laptops

LONDON, 2016-Aug-10 — /EPR Retail News/ — Today, 4 August 2016, Currys PC World unveils its new campaign – ‘Get Started’. The cross-channel campaign looks to champion consumers’ passions and ambitions in a move to highlight the retailer’s new lifestyle based segmentation of laptops to make the shopping experience easier and less techy.

‘Get Started’ will be amplified through multiple platforms and channels combining digital, PR social and above the line content to appeal to consumers on every level.

The retailer’s new slick and impactful ATL creative showcases a beautifully choreographed display of the retailer’s HP laptop range. The storyline centres around the idea that laptops provide a springboard for people to fulfil their dreams and embark on new ventures, so that they can achieve what they want to do.

The spot features laptops ‘dancing’ in creative formations linked to photography, being a DJ and becoming an online florist, inspiring viewers through both functionality and emotion.

The creative also highlights Currys PC World’s trade-in policy and its in-store customer service offering to help transfer data from an old laptop to a new one, as well as get the product up and running.

Working with retained creative agency AMV BBDO and media agency Blue 449, Currys PC World’s new ATL campaign will feature across TV, print and digital platforms.  The campaign launches on 4th August with a 30 second TV spot running until 31st August.

The digital activity, also live throughout August, will feature first hand experiences around passions and ambitions from key social influencers across fashion, fitness, travel and photography. The content will focus on how they got started in their field and how using laptops enabled them to explore and develop these passions. Nearly 60 pieces of content will be produced and amplified across the influencers’ own channels and the Currys PC World platforms, which will be supported by an integrated PR, social and content campaign led by M&C Saatchi PR and 1000 Heads.

The campaign forms part of Currys PC World’s ‘Computing Leadership Forum’ strategy to showcase innovation and new technology, with an underlying message of value and relevance. By working closely alongside manufacturers including Microsoft, HP and Intel, the retailer aims to drive consideration and purchase opportunities in an ‘always on’ world both for the short and long term.

Head of Marketing for Computing at Dixons Carphone, Rob Stacey, says: “As market leaders we want to play our part in inspiring people to upgrade to a new laptop and make choosing a laptop a little less daunting. Our new user-friendly segmentation and amazing services can really help with that.”

International Account Manager for HP, Celine Chapron, says: “We’re working with Currys PC World to ensure our vision, to create technology that makes life better for everyone, everywhere comes to life.   Through our portfolio of PCs we engineer experiences that amaze. It doesn’t matter the customer age, their day to day job, evening hobbies or weekends passions, it’s about offering differentiation to customers with colours, beautiful design, and the latest tech features with no compromise.”

AMV BBDO Creative Director, Rob Steeles, adds: “The new creative taps into people’s dormant ambitions. We want consumers to realise that with the right tech, and Currys PC World’s expertise, there’s never been a better time to kick-start something new. Reinvigoration was also key for the look and feel of the spot, so we gave the visual treatment plenty of energy accompanied with an up-tempo track. The ad grabs attention and inspires people to take action.”

74% of Brits fake positive reactions to disappointing gifts at Christmas – Currys PC World Language of Gift Exchange report

  • Three quarters (74%) of Brits fake positive reactions to disappointing gifts at Christmas – with women (80%) more likely to fake it than men (69%)
  • That’s lovely’, ‘that’s nice’ and even ‘just what I wanted’ can be signs that your gift has disappointed
  • 79% of under-30’s – and 45% of over-60’s – use emojis to say thank-you for a present
  • Currys PC World worked alongside social anthropologist Kate Fox on how to identify when someone does or doesn’t like a present

LONDON, 2015-12-10 — /EPR Retail News/ — With the gifting season upon us, Brits are living up to polite stereotypes with three-quarters of us admitting that we pretend to like disappointing presents.

The Currys PC World Language of Gift Exchange report, compiled by leading social anthropologist Kate Fox and her colleagues at the Oxford-based Social Issues Research Centre, exposes the verbal and non-verbal ways the British public will react to gifts this Christmas. Women are revealed to be the greatest pretenders, with 80% admitting to feigning delight versus 69% of men. Perhaps surprisingly, young people are more polite than their elders: under-30’s are more likely (77%) to feign happiness for a present than the over-60’s (71%).

When it comes to the phrases we use, Brits this year will stick to a range of ‘vanilla’ responses that we feel comfortable won’t give the game away – with a simple ‘thank you,’ or an untruthful but polite ‘that’s nice’ key giveaways that your Christmas present hasn’t gone down well.

Top phrases we use to fake it

  1. Thank you – 52%
  2. That’s nice – 36%
  3. That’s lovely – 31%
  4. Oh…thanks – 23%
  5. That’s just what I wanted – 17%

Although the majority of us admit to faking it, we’re also all convinced we can’t be fooled: almost nine out of ten1of us believe we can identify someone pretending to be happy with a gift – in contrast to the 21% of us who don’t believe they are very convincing at faking it themselves. Leading social anthropologist Kate Fox comments: “People tend to overestimate their abilities as ‘lie detectors,’ and underestimate their ability to lie successfully. We are actually very good at faking delight – such as orgasms – and not so good at spotting fakery.”

When it comes to being truly happy, the report revealed a range of reactions that Brits see as most likely to show the gift-giver has nailed the perfect present. Over a quarter feel that ‘excited repetition’ (such as ‘Thank you! thank you! thank you!’) is the best indicator of genuine delight, with 17% stating that disbelief (such as ‘No way!’) is a sure-fire way to tell that someone is really, truly pleased. A smart minority (14%) know that dilated pupils are the only reaction that is impossible to fake.

Top reactions Brits think reveal genuine delight

  1. Excited repetition (e.g. “I love it!, I love it!”) – 26%
  2. Showing love to the giver (e.g. hugging, kissing) – 23%
  3. Showing love to the gift (clutching, cuddling, can’t put it down) – 19%
  4. Disbelief (e.g. No way! You’re kidding!) – 17%
  5. It’s all in the eyes: dilated pupils – 14%
  6. Gasping, shrieking, yelping – 14%
  7. Stunned silence (too emotional to speak) – 14%

Anthropologist Kate Fox comments: “Although all of these reactions, apart from dilated pupils, can quite easily be faked, recipients of disappointing gifts tend not to perform quite such ecstatic displays, as this could encourage the giver to choose a similarly inappropriate gift next year.”

Those who will be thanking someone via text or social media this Christmas will also present tell-tale signs that they’re truly happy. The Currys PC World survey reveals 65% of us plan to use emojis to express genuine happiness for a present, and one smiley-face is no longer enough: over half of us now feel that multiple repeated emojis or even elaborate, creative emoji ‘sentences’ and ‘stories’  are required to show we’re genuinely delighted. The top emojis used to express genuine delight are:

Anthropologist Kate Fox comments: “The proliferation of emojis in our thank-yous shows that non-verbal signals – smiles, frowns, winks, hugs, tone of voice, etc. – are a vital part of human interaction. When we are deprived of this element, in texts and social media messages, we compensate by using symbolic representations of these signals in an exaggerated manner.”

Gary Booker, Chief Marketing Officer of Dixons Carphone, comments: “We all know that, from time to time, we might get given a pretty awful present from someone who really does care, but who just got it wrong for whatever reason. So we don’t insult them, and because of our British-ness, we feel the need to pretend that we love it – even if we don’t. What’s great about this report is that it helps us Brits to learn how best not to upset the gift-giver this Christmas, and also how to express when we really do love a gift. Most importantly though, it should help people to spot the warning signs that they’ve given a bad present themselves, and encourage them to step up their game next year.”

The Language of Gift Exchange Report comes as the next instalment to the Currys PC World Spare the Actcampaign, which saw Jeff Goldblum teach the nation how to feign delight in the Currys PC World Christmas adverts: https://goo.gl/4rHcUu

LONDON, 2015-11-30 — /EPR Retail News/ — With yesterday’s website traffic almost as high as Boxing Day last year, Currys PC World is today reporting its biggest ever start to Black Friday, with seven million visitors to the site this week already.

This morning alone, there has been a 1100% increase in hourly unique visitors and a 2900% increase on orders compared to the same time last week. In-store, the Lenovo G50 15.6 inch laptop (£249.99, was £349.99) the LG Smart Ultra HD 4K 55 inch TV (£699, was £1,199) and the Samsung Smart Ultra HD 4K 55 inch TV (£899, was £1299) are some of the current best-sellers.

With a 30% increase in deals and a 40% increase in stock, Currys PC World saw a record peak in mobile phone traffic of 58% as the deals went live at 6am. As stores across the country began to open and people made their way into work, traffic switched from mobile to in-store and desktops.

Black Tag deals are continuing throughout the weekend with up to £600 off large screen 4K TVs, wearable tech at half price and nutri-blenders at their lowest ever price.  Customers are taking advantage of the various multichannel options available, with 90% of customer journeys starting online and shoppers choosing to Click and Collect or take advantage of free home delivery.

Stuart Ramage, E-Commerce Director at Currys PC World, says: “Last year was one of our most successful trading days ever so we’ve spent the last year preparing for this year’s event. We’ve seen unprecedented demand online with a 53% increase in hourly web traffic and across the country we’ve seen customers queuing from before the stores open – everyone’s in good spirits and things are running smoothly.”
